The Don S. McClure Show Black History - Leading Black Auto Maker 1915

    in Lifestyle

The Don S. McClure Show Live-Black History Leading Black Auto maker 1915

Mr. Charles Richard Patterson, founder of what was to become the world's first Black family owned automobile manufacturing company. The head of this remarkable family was Charles (Rich) Patterson. He was born a slave on a West Virginia plantation and learned blacksmithing skills that would prove useful through-out his life.

The C.R. Patterson & Son Carriage Company of Greenfield, Ohio became the nation's, and the world's, first and only African-American founded and owned automobile manufacturing company. The company began as a manufacturer of horse drawn carriages and ended up as a manufacturer of buses for both urban transportation systems and rural school needs.

In 1873 C.R. Patterson went into partnership with a white businessman, named  J.P. Lowe. ten years later into the very successful business venture J. P. Lowe died leaving the business and sole ownership to C.R Patterson. There are some who say C.R. purchased the entire company from J.P before he died.

The C.R. Patterson Co. turned out 28 different types of horse-drawn vehicles.

The product line included buggies, backboards, phaetons, rockaways and surreys — the era's most popular wagons.

Patterson and his wife, the former Josephine Qutz, were the parents of four children: Katherine, Dollie, Frederick Douglass, and Samuel. It was Fred who helped guide the company into the Automobile Age in the early 20th century.

    Praying Through the Bible #63

    TEXT: Psalm 84:8-9

We are in a series of messages titled "Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible". The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have done 62 messages in this series.

This is message #63, titled "Praying to God Outside of the Box"

In Canada, there is a village along the Rideau (RI-DOH) Lake system. This village now only has a population of about a hundred people, but it was once a bustling town centered around a series of rapids flowing between two lakes. Because of the difference in elevation between the lakes, a dam and a lock had to be built in this town. The dam held back the water and created a fast-flowing series of rapids that provided the energy to run mills. Farmers from miles around came to the town to use these mills, and it grew, quickly becoming one of the most important towns along the Rideau.

The importance of the town was inseparable from the dam. It was this dam that held back the water, confining it and then allowing it to be released with the power to drive the mills. Without the dam, the town would have been no more important than any of the others along the canal.

Many Christians, whether we admit it or not, whether we actually realize it or not, have dammed God up. We have erected barriers around who we believe God is and what we believe God can do. And, it is this tendency that causes us not to pray big prayers or to pray and not really expect our prayers to be answered.

Today, I want us to see from this passage how that when we pray, we need to see God, not for Who we have made Him out to be or for Who we feel comfortable praying to, but as the God Who the Bible says He is -- God outside of the box.

    Workforce Recognition and Employee Engagement

    in Business

#TChat Radio is all new on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at 7:30 pm ET (4:30 pm PT).   Doesn't everybody love their job?   Unfortunately no. Too many are not happy, disengaged and feel they just aren't being recognized. At all. Major shifts in technology, social media and management strategy (or lack thereof) have drastically changed how we work, and not for the better. In fact, lost productivity of actively disengaged employees costs the US economy $370 billion annually according to Gallup research.   But when employees are recoginized and rewarded, they are more engaged and emotionally connected to their work, sometimes upwards of four times more so than their unrecognized counterparts.   How should we do that today? Well, #TChat co-creators and hosts Meghan M. Biro and Kevin W. Grossman welcome this week's guests, Stan Phelps, founder of 9 INCH Marketing and author of "What's Your Green Goldfish," and S. Max Brown, Principal at Rideau’s Recognition Management Institute and keynote speaker and keynote speaker.   This will be another great "world of engagement" show, so we hope to see you here!   **SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: We’re thrilled to announce our first “world of work” partnership — with Achievers. Read about it here!
