Are Invasive Species A Viable Option For Renewable Energy?

    in Environment

As we shift from petroleum-based energy to renewable energy, the production of biofuel, created from invasive species appears to be a viable option. However, certain plant species which have been proposed for biofuel production include invasive species and/or other plants which have the potential to escape cultivation. Is this a good solution for eliminating an environmental issue while satisfying an energy need or is this type of biofuel merely creating a disaster in the making? In this segment of The Clean Energy View Radio Show, hosts, June Stoyer and special guest host, Luis Mejia talk to Dr. Lewis Ziska about the pros and cons of using invasive species as biofuel. Dr. Ziska is a Plant Physiologist with the USDA's Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Maryland. After graduating from the University of California, Davis, he began his career as a Smithsonian fellow, and then took up residence as the Project Leader for global climate change at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines before joining USDA. Dr. Ziska has published numerous papers on carbon dioxide and climate change impacts on agriculture, weed biology and public health. At present he is investigating the role of rising carbon dioxide and changing climate on food security, invasive species and aerobiology. Dr. Ziska's research has appeared in: The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report and CNN Headline News. • The Impact on Business of Deregulation: The Case of Energy

    in Business

On August 19, my guest will be Susan Mazonson, an independent associate with Viridian Energy.   She is an expert at building wealth by spotting trends and industry developments.

Her career began as one of the first female college hires at AT&T, part of the “high potential” management program.   Subsequently, she was recruited to lead the charge of New Business Development for the second largest US telecom equipment manufacturer.  There, she created the business plan for the infrastructure to power the emerging U.S. cellular radio networks, referred to today as mobile or wireless.

When deregulation of the telecom industry occurred, Susan leveraged that by starting two boutique consulting firms, advising incumbent carriers on how to compete in this new paradigm shift of competition, innovation, and technological advancement.  Among her clients were AT&T, Verizon, Alcatel-Lucent, all the Bell Operating Companies, and many other market entrants creating new niches.

After riding the telecom deregulation wave for nearly 30 years, Susan recognized that the deregulation of the energy sector was the next “once ever” opportunity to not only create substantial wealth, but at the same time, do good for the environment.   She now offers simple, innovative, renewable energy solutions for consumers and businesses.  And she trains, mentors and coaches business professionals and entrepreneurs to create a part-time, recession-proof, passive, residual income, by sharing the benefits of choosing renewable energy options.

Susan has a B.S. degree in Applied Mathematics from Brown University and an MBA in Marketing and Finance from University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.
