Religious Freedom or Freedom to Discriminate Part 2

    in Politics

With internet glitches not allowing me to pull up my research I could not really do Part 1 justice, so, Part 2...

I'd love to have some who listened to my archived show on this topic call me LIVE starting at 11:05 p.m. Friday, May 1.

From Indiana's Pence to Louisiana's Jindal, right-wing governors are supporting and signing legislation that allows businesses to discriminate against same-sex couples. Pizza Parlors, Florists, Photographers, Beds and Breakfasts, and other business have said they would refuse service, or actually have refused service to same sex couples. Some of these governors are backing down from their own legislation.

Businesses are pulling out of Indiana, and other states - they will NOT back discrimination as a right. These businesses - such as Salesforce - have cited reasons that are all about diversity.

20 states have passed some form of religious freedom law - including Connecticut, and Rhode Island - which shocked the bleep out of me. Religious freedom laws are pending in 6 states - North Carolina, Georgia, Hawaii (seriously?), Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada. Similar legislation has failed in 6 states - including Utah, which also surprised me. 18 states, plus Washington, D.C. do NOT have current legislation similar the RFRA's pending or recently passed.

Do these governors and state legislators understand that states rights cannot usurp a persons' constitutional rights? "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..."

I bet you know where I stand on this issue, but I want to know where you stand - and why.

Let's explore the rights - and wrongs of these laws.

I hope you will join me.

    Arkansas's Religious Freedom Restoration Act

    in Politics

The value of religious freedom is paramount in our country — that’s why it’s enshrined in our nation’s Constitution. Let there be no doubt: People of faith and their right to exercise their closely held religious beliefs are fully protected. Most unfortunately, a select group of insidious activists and elected officials is pretending those protections don’t exist and is threatening the civil rights of LGBT Americans. Dr Julian Bond

The Arkansas  Senate advanced two identical bills that were amended today to reflect the federal "Religious Freedom Restoration Act." Gov. Asa Hutchinson, in a press conference this morning, called on legislative leaders to change the controversial HB 1228 to mirror the federal RFRA. He said it would aid in showing the world that Arkansas “does not discriminate and understands tolerance.” Arkansas Blog

FREEDOM'S GATE: RFRA - Gay discrimination or religious freedom?

    in Politics Conservative

Why are the two mutually disagreeable - particularly in 2015?

Did Indiana and Arkansas’ Religious Freedom Restoration Acts permit discrimination against gays and lesbians, or were they a legitimate means to protect constitutional rights? According to Republican Governors Mike Pence and Asa Hutchinson, their states' respective laws did not discriminate against gay individuals, yet both compromise bills to accommodate gay rights activists.

Some gay rights groups are now demanding that churches that do not support same-sex marriage be shut down. Has a new culture war been launched against Christianity? Is the Religious Freedom Restoration Act being used as a weapon to actually discriminate against Christians instead of protecting their religious freedom from liberal intolerance?

PWN 2015.4.1: Religious Freedom, the good and the bad

    in News

In the first edition of PWN for the month of April, RevKess and KaliSara will tackle some of the latest news and issues about RFRAs in the United States. These laws are supposed to protect religious freedom, but often tromp on the beliefs and rights of minorities - racial, ethnic, sexual, and religious minorities. Along the way they will address related issues and talk about some of the really good news that is going on in the Pagan world.

Religion and politics are often the hot button issues that PWN tackles, but the hosts are also wanting to cover the good that is going on in the world and how it effects the global Pagan community. They'd like to hear from you. Is there an event in your area? a new shoppe opening up? a special mile marker in the life of an individual or institution that you think the listeners would like to know about? Send the hosts an email at paganmusings@gmail.com or contact them via Facebook.

Times Are Changing: Is A Religious Freedom Law Relevant?

    in Business

It’s Holy Week, the most important season in the Christian calendar.  During this week millions of Christians worldwide will commemorate the cruxifiction and resurrection of Jesus Christ between Good Friday and Easter Sunday morning.   Yet the story of the week is not so much the triumph of Jesus dying and rising from the dead for our sins….but rather an obscure “Religious Freedom” bill that just passed in Indiana, targeted squarely at discriminating against those in the LGBTQ community.

The country, quite frankly is up in arms against this new law and it’s putting much heat on the governor of Indiana and the legislature that passed the law.  Companies are moving their employees out of the state, and major conventions are weighing their options about holding future meetings in Indiana.  Even the giant retailer, Walmart, flexed its muscles and put a squeeze on the governor of Arkansas not to sign a similar bill.

Times are changing. The question is why do some feel the need to shut out minority groups…this time in the name of religion??
