Welcome to the Ways to Wellbeing radio show. I'm your host, Miriam Henke, & today's topic is Addiction and Recovery. I chat with Sue McPherson, program director of the Bel-Mar Treatment Program, who shares her own story of addiction, recovery & how others can overcome this destructive disease. This show is for those who are in the grips of this disease, those who love them, & for practitioners who work in the field of addiction.
The Bel-Mar treatment philosophy holds the belief that recovery involves a combination of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. Merely ceasing the addictive behaviour will not bring long term recovery.
The Bel-Mar treatment program specialises in addiction treatment for adults with both substance (alcohol, illicit and prescription drugs), & behavioural addictions (gambling, sex, spending, gaming, relationships). Sue gives details about their 3 stage program structure.
The area which sets this program apart from other rehabs is the focus on the root cause of the problem, investigating why there has been the need to use substances and behaviours to mood alter. Family & friends are also important - there are programs and services to help them too.
Connect with Sue at email@example.com and/or visit Bel-Mar's website at: www.bel-mar.com.au

"I got into Punk rock when I was 13 years old, back in 1984. I was angry, confused and messed up. My life was all about getting high, getting drunk and doing whatever. I started playing guitar and singing at 15, the same time I went to jail for the first time. The next 15 years were spent in and out of prison. I always believed in God, I just didn't know him. My moment of clarity came to me, one more time, in jail. I realized that this was the best I could do on my own. I realized that there was one thing I hadn't tried. I remember all of the rehabs I went to talking about God and a Spiritual program. I prayed to God that day and I told Him I was done, but I needed His help through this. Well, I sobered in a 12 step program and did exactly what they told me to do.
Four years later, I came home from work and my wife was praying with my kids at the dinner table. It toook ,e back, and she asked me to go to Church with her. God really spoke to me that day. God really touched me that day. God really changed me that day. I gave my life to Jesus Christ and a whole side of God that I had never experienced was shown to me. I have never been the same. In Fact, I'm changing constantly, and Jesus is healing me and giving me breakthroughs in my life and the lives of my family. PRAISE THE LORD! The deeper I go, the more dependent I am on Him! I love Jesus and I will serve Him for eternity!

Over and over again, I see postings about being tired after brain injury. Even years later, we seem to never be able to recover after doing almost nothing. Well, it's been proven over and over again that the Endocrine system takes a beating with brain trauma. Bleeds, hydrocephalus, car accidents and on and on, the thyroid just does not like changes it seems.
I've learned through my own head injury and even after 44 months in brain rehabs, nobody seems to know to check the thyroid after head injury. I'll talk about this and a few other things maybe you and your doctor should talk about after brain injury. Call in and let me know if you are taking something for either HypOthyroid or HypErthyroid. I take .112mcg's of Levothyroxine/Synthroid. 424-243-9540

This show will be for listeners and supporters to call in, ask questions about the film, it's current status, why the crowdfunding campaign, what is this money for, how much further do we have to go and when will the film be released.
Over 1.3 million people get a DUI each year. Most are people are coerced illegally to AA meetings. Many who get addicted to pain medication are not "addicts" of the 12 set variety, yet when they go to a rehab thinking they will help from Doctors, nurses and therapists to detox , they find themsleves too often in the hands of crazy steppers, telling them they are broken and that they have a "spiritual disease" 'malady"
How much more crazy does it have to get.
How many more people will have to die in rehab for this crap to stop... for rehabs to be shut down if they are such dismal failures.
We can make a difference. We can expose, educate and force AA, NA and the judical system to change!
