Cammarata grew up playing in club bands (started on the Stax/Volt catalog) in Baltimore, MD. At 17 he was afforded the privelege of recording 2 singles on the local Bay Sound label with the 'semi-legendary' George Massenberg producing. In 1974 he relocated to Los Angeles for the express purpose of becoming a rock star. The Zippers (1976 to 1981). This was anti-disco/corporate hair band time in LA. The best description of The Zips is they were kinda the unholy offspring of The Kinks and Cheap Trick . The band released a single on Backdoor Man Records in '78, and a subsequent Ray Manzarek produced 6 song EP on Rhino in '81 just before they imploded.Cammarata used the next 5 years establishing a new career in production and musical prostitution. This afforded him the opportunity to work with new and established artists; playing guitar, doing background vocals, arranging... whatever. From this grew a nice referral list of pro players hired for 'one-shot' parts. The result was a succession of reciprical session work with guys like sax man Cornelius Bumphus, violinist David Green, pianist Mike Garson, and a whole boatload of interesting and 'art-for-art's-sake' musicians.
After a self-imposed 20 year hiatus Cammarata found himself in Phoenix. These days Cammarata performs with partners The New Brothers; a stripped-down, 3 man, guitar/vocal trio. The songs have taken on a new interprative persona live; mostly because, as Cammarata puts it... "The songs are what they are; naked. I expect my bandmates to dress them as the situation demands. Obviously, playing with guys like Charlie (Dickens) and Reggie (Chavez) makes this intuitive.... it's intentional."His music has been described as "An amalgam of gutter-blues, spaghetti-western mastication, and late night innuendo".

Tune in Sunday May 19th at 5:30 p.m. as MHH Radio hosts Ray Lawrence Jr.
Singer, songwriter, independent recording artist and touring musician. These are just a few things that describe Ray Lawrence Jr. Music has been a major part of Ray's life and music is the one thing thing that has helped him to survive. Ray has many experiences that give him the ideas for the songs he writes and he thinks about those things he went through as he performs his songs. Even the cover songs he does of other artists are songs that have meaning for him. A song must mean something to sing it right so feeling can be put into it and this is what you will hear and feel when Ray Lawrence Jr. performs a song. The idea is to help you heal through the music and for you to have a song to help you feel better.
Ray Lawrence Jr was born the oldest of 8 children in Chicago, IL. July 4, 1963 and was raised in Southern California, 3 hours south of Bakersfield. Ray began his music career at age 5, singing in school plays and later learned to play guitar and learnied other instruments. Having a father from Texas who was a lover of country music and bluegrass and being raised in what was back in the 60's, a hot bed for country music, Ray was in a good position to be influenced by artists like Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Buck Owens, Lester flat and Earl Scruggs, The Dillards, AKA The Darlings when they were on The Andy Griffith Show, Hee Haw, The Beverley Hillbillies, The Johnny Cash Show and The Glen Campbell show. Merle Haggard was also a huge musical influence. Read More at http://raylawrencejr.fourfour.com/home
