Emma Freedman - Jungle Heroes - Saving the Rainforest to Save the Orangutan

    in Environment

Emma Freedman is a conservationist, scientist and teen activist.  When she was 10 years old she traveled to Borneo and saw the orangutans in the wild.  She witnessed the devastation of the rainforest firsthand and knew that she needed to take action.

Emma founded JungleHeroes.org, a project to raise awareness about the rainforest and orangutans and help kids and teens make a positive difference in the environment.  She speaks internationally at schools and conferences.

The main goals of the project are to raise awareness for the rainforest and to inspire other youth so they can help make a difference. The issues are complex– balancing human development, against the needs of the planet, but Emma believes engaging her generation is the solution. - See more at: http://www.thevoiceofleadership.com/upcoming-programs.html#sthash.1kzBjbBy.dpuf

Film, Oil & Water David Poritz & Fair Trade Oil

    in Lifestyle

Mitchell’s guest this evening is a young man whose story was one of two told in the film Oil & Water, David Poritz, about the devastation of large swaths of the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest, right in the middle of Indian tribal lands inhabited by the indigenous people for generations.  The film was featured on Progressive Film Hour on March 3, on which Mitchell interviewed one of the filmmakers, Francine Strickwerda and the other young man whose story was told in the film, Hugo Lucitante.

Both controversial and with impassioned, environmentalist emotions set aside, today’s guest, David Poritz, is creating a novel and really desperately needed protection of indigenously-populated lands through the ranking/rating system of safety and what need to be eco-sensitive practices by the oil industry, just as we have fair-trade certification for coffee, diamonds and other commodities often originating in the highly-exploited “Global South”.

Oil and Water will be the featured film for the matinee showing at the Paradigm Shifts Music and Film Festival on Sunday, March 29 at 3pm. For more information and tickets, go to: http://abetterworld.tv/a-music-and-film-festival-march-19-29/

John Marshall - Wide Open World

    in Books

In 2010, John Marshall needed a change. He was feeling disconnected from his wife and his two teenage kids were lost in cyberspace. In an effort to pull his family back together, John proposed they take a six month trip around the world. Not the sightseeing-hotel-restaurant kind of trip, but a volunteer adventure, working with service organizations in all kinds of interesting projects.

And so, they spent time at an animal sanctuary in the rainforest of Costa Rica, labored on organic farms in New Zealand, taught English in rural Thailand, fell in love with orphans in India, and worked alongside a Buddhist monk high in the Himalayas.

John documents the highs and lows of this family vacation unlike any other in WIDE-OPEN WORLD (Ballantine Books; On Sale 2/10/15)

John Marshall is a nine-time Emmy Award–winning writer, producer, and director. In addition to his work behind the camera, Marshall has been a familiar face on Maine television for more than ten years, writing and hosting numerous weekly TV shows. Wide-Open World is his first book.

    Live Natural Live Well

    in Health

Cowspiracy is the documentary everyone needs to watch. Filmakers Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn will be joining me for an in depth interview on the impact of animal agricultural on our environment and why everyone seems to be ignoring it.

Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones,” and virtually every other environmental ill. Yet it goes on, almost entirely unchallenged.

As Andersen approaches leaders in the environmental movement, he increasingly uncovers what appears to be an intentional refusal to discuss the issue of animal agriculture, while industry whistleblowers and watchdogs warn him of the risks to his freedom and even his life if he dares to persist.

As eye-opening as Blackfish and as inspiring as An Inconvenient Truth, this shocking yet humorous documentary reveals the absolutely devastating environmental impact large-scale factory farming has on our planet, and offers a path to global sustainability for a growing population.
