Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Ragan Whiteside!

    in Music

Since our beautiful and multiply talented guest was with us last time, MUCH has happened - all good!  Ragan told us that she had a new project coming - and here it is!  Released on July 8th, it's already being pushed to the top - Ragan has SO many fans who have waited for this :)  And there's MORE news to share: just a month or so ago, Ragan won a prestigious award from "Black Women in Jazz & Fine Arts" - prod her to tell us about that - it won't take much, believe it.  She is very proud of this - and understandably so!

If you aren't familiar with the background of this flutist/vocalist/composer/arranger, prepare to be impressed.  Ragan was playing multiple instruments at the age of FIVE!  But the piano, drums and violin didn't compare to the love she had for the flute.  Classical studies were a natural transition for her - just as natural - immersing herself after her education (Cleveland Institute of Music, Harid Conservatory) in New York.  But NOT classically ;)  Ragan dove into Jazz, Funk and R & B - and did it ALL with flair!

She won the Capital Jazz Fest's coveted "New Artist Competition" - and released her debut album thereafter.  With "Class Axe" in 2007 - then "Evolve" in 2012 - you can hear just that: EVOLUTON!  Trusted and acclaimed producers and arrangers, Dennis Johnson and Bob Baldwin, assisted in conveying the "Raganometry" that's a trademark of everything she does.  Like the Pillsbury Dough Boy, Ragan Whiteside is Poppin' Fresh, 24/7!  One listen to the new "Quantum Drive" and you'll hear another LEVEL of that!  Check out who was happy to come onboard for this endeavor: Bob Baldwin, of course - he was an EARLY believer in Ragan.  Plus, Althea Rene, Frank McComb and Patrice Rushen!

    Let's celebrate!

Hybrid Jazz Valentine's Day - with Ragan Whiteside!

    in Music

Ragan Whiteside's name has been one of those that I've heard for a while.  Through the past few years, excited friends or acquaintances would pass along that they had the opportunity to work with her.  And that - no matter what the project - her presence and artistry added a special, positive dimension to the work of others. So, it's truly wonderful that she has the time to talk about her OWN work - it's overdue that this superb flutist, vocalist and songwriter focuses on RAGAN WHITESIDE :-D

Born in New York state, five year-old Ragan gravitated to music in a big way.  Piano, Drums, Violin - she loved all of it!  Flute touched her heart.  And she began studying in earnest.  Her classical training and personal style resulted in awards for both performance and composition.  She attended the Cleveland Institute of Music and Harid Conservatory - then she returned to New York for serious immersion in the industry.

Ragan has made some lifelong friends in this business - Bob Baldwin is one of them - and he had a hand in the production of her second album, "Evolve."  He believes that her talent is immense - but that her passion to be viewed as a multi-genre artist is a key component to her success.  She cannot be confined by labels and that's why her music pops.  Let's just say that our Ragan is a Hybrid ;)

When you view her website, take note of a woman-in-charge.  The first thing you notice, besides the beautiful female focal point, is that you can access her music (and Ragan!) simply.  ReverbNation, Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, and iTunes.  It's all there so that you can feel the magic of our guest with just a click.

Join us in the third hour of the show on 2/13 and get to know this Capital Jazz New Artist Award winner.  And get a clearer picture as to why this scintillating talent has so many fans

Hassan Whiteside's Days in Miami are numbered

    in Basketball

Quite the performance by Hassan Whiteside of the Heat in Tuesday night's loss to the Hawks: 23 points on 11-for-12 shooting, 14 rebounds and four blocks in just 31 minutes. If Dwyane Wade had not come down with a migraine, the Heat might actually be 3-1 instead of 2-2.

Folks in Miami are rightfully thrilled about the emergence last season and this season by Whiteside, but here is the bad news: Unless Miami plans to renounce its right to Dwyane Wade, there is almost zero chance they can retain him when he becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Whiteside is on the second year of a two-year contract, and when it expires he will become what is known as an "Early Bird" free agent -- as opposed to a "Full Bird" free agent who is coming off a contract of three years or more.

So the Heat cannot offer him a max contract, while plenty of other teams can.Mike Scotto addressed this in his list of the Top 25 Free Agents of 2016, and Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel went into further detail:

"With Whiteside to fall short of full Bird Rights due to only a two-year tenure with the team, the Heat still will have to create salary-cap space to re-sign him next summer. The only way for the Heat to go over the 2016-17 salary cap to re-sign Whiteside would be if he would sign for the average salary as part of his Early Bird Rights, a figure of less than $10 million, one expected to be far below his market value."

I passed along this information during an interview on the Big O show on AM560 in Miami today, and it hit the host -- and a bunch of listeners, I am certain, like a ton of bricks.

Give a listen and you will see what I mean.

The Andrew Powell Show presented by FanDuel

    in Sports

TONIGHT ON THE SHOW (LIVE @ 8:00 PM ET): Even though the Miami HEAT lost last night, Hassan Whiteside did not. He finished the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves last night with 22 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks. What is his ceiling? And what can we say about the Miami HEAT? An atheist Bill Maher and practicing Catholic Stephen Colbert poked fun at each other last night. Why do differences of religion (and even sports) make people hate each other so much? The guys make their NFL picks tonight for the upcoming weekend! (But with a twist) Why don't people like Cam Newton? How much of a factor does race play into it? And if Rob Gronkowski were black, would we have a different perception on his life? Could Democratic Socialism work in the United States when it works all across the planet? The guys discuss Bernie Sanders and his agenda. And Packers fans are blaming WHO for Aaron Rodgers' struggles...? PLUS MORE! You can call into the show at (929) 477-1592 and you can tweet the show @andrewrpowell or @ThePowellShow. The Andrew Powell Show presented by FanDuel is LIVE Monday-Friday 8:00-10:00 PM ET here only on MSL Radio and FOX Sports Radio.
