The term discrimination is too often associated with racism versus disability. In addition, racism and discrimination are frequently related in the U.S. media to the victimization of African-Americans and other Non-White groups by White Americans. As a result, African-American students with mental/learning or physical disabilities are often overlooked as they face the challenges of higher education and workforce success. Dr. Applewhite is joined by Special Guest Professor Kelmer Muhammad (Educator, Entrepreneur, Author) to discuss discrimination and realistic solutions. This is a previous broadcast aired on 11-16-13 as “Students Discuss Reality of Discrimination We appreciate your one time or monthly donation of at least $5 or more to continue our radio broadcasts and help our students and Veterans with disabilities, in reaching their education and workforce goals? I think I said it all. Manpower are bigots, and support bigots, in their laptop testing division. He was asked to keep quiet, until today...! Hey, Larena, John, and James; what do you find funny now?!?!? Oh, I have stories.... All in due time....!
The country been engaged in peaceful protest for the injustice of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. Police brutality is happening so much in this nation to the point it's a everyday occurence. Our elected officials stay quiet while the country is angry and want change in police culture. Will the protest work? Will we see change with police?
On this edition of Who We Got Wednesday, we discuss Women as Leaders, Church Discrimination and Education with Pastor Karen Wilson on Who We Got Wednesday!
Pastor Wilson considers herself "trained in the School of Hard Knocks, under the instruction of the Holy Spirit of the living God."
Born in Boston Massachusetts and raised in Washington DC, Pastor Karen Wilson put her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education to work as she taught in the Virginia Beach Public School System for 29 years.
Pastor Wilson was licensed to preach in 1997 and ordained in 2000. Shortly thereafter she assumed pastorship of Temple of Peace in Newport News, VA.
The media has brought to the forefront cases that have caused public outrage and concern. From the curious case of Trayvon Martin killed by George Zimmerman, Michael Brown gunned down as an unarmed felon, to the disturbing incidents surrounding the death of Sandra Bland, there is a definite rise in racial tensions across the United States as the media blares a giant searchlight on situations of African Americans in some sort of confrontation with a Caucasian.
When these incidents come into the public eye, they lead to an overarching question: "Why?" One black man made a very famous statement while being beaten by a group of police officers: "Can't we all just get along?" The statement has been taken seriously and at the same time, been made a parody. But the question, however one puts it remains. "Can't we all just get along?"
Is racism simply part of America's DNA -- what makes up this country? Is this just a thing we have to live with and accept? Will those who try to work to bring harmony on either side be ridiculed? Why can't we as a nation get past this? Why does it keep rearing its head?

The stories are becoming all too familiar - Oscar Grant, John Crawford III, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, and many others whose names don't make national headlines. #BlackLivesMatter has become the cry of the African-American community as the lives of young Black men and women are taken at the hands of police while unarmed. Why are people of color stopped, searched, arrested, and killed in disproportionate numbers compared to their Caucasian counterparts? How can unarmed "suspects" such as John Crawford III or Oscar Grant get shot on site when people who commit heinous acts - such as James Eagan Holmes who killed 12 and injured 70 in a crowded movie theatre - are arrested and given every benefit of the doubt? Let's discuss it and find some real solutions beyond the hashtags. Because of the nature of this subject matter, parental discresion is advised for children under 13.
