Living with Bi Polar disorder with author Rachel Pappas!
"Hopping Roller Coasters" tells the story of author Rachel Pappas who was an in-your face mother, but loved her daughter more than life. "Mom doesn’t play around when the neighborhood bully’s taunting got way out of hand. She stood up to hard-nosed teachers who didn’t get that you don’t punish a child who’s flailing; Marina needed help. And she sat in the front row, clapping till her palms hurt when her half-Greek, half-Jewish daughter took the podium at her predominantly African American school—glowing in her cap, gown, and greased cornrows." No one was going to hurt Marina. No one. Except Rachel herself, diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a condition her daughter would struggle with too. This is the story of a mother and daughter’s journey, a two-decade-long roller coaster ride. Actually you’re hopping from one roller coaster to the next through this openly told story of unexpected turns and pure love. A story that’s both intense and quite funny at times as Rachel takes you on the journey of Marina's psychiatric hospitalizations, cutting and overdosing, while Rachel deals with her own demons and the diagnosis of cancer. This openly, honestly told story finally comes full circle leaving us with lessons on redefining success, mortality, loving, forgiving and being forgiven.

Rachel Pappas, author of "Hopping Roller Coasters",stops by!
I have not had an easy time, but Marina’s had a rougher ride. Thirteen hospitalizations, five schools in five years. And in between, a blur of ambulance rides, runaways, and mother-daughter meltdowns. Much of what happened is tied to that while I love my daughter more than life, I unleashed my rage on her, and she eventually crashed and burned. After years of reaching and slipping we start to heal, when I face cancer. The story becomes about forgiving and being forgiven. It’s about

Topically Yours - Singer Rachel Brown
Deardra Shuler interviews singer Rachel Brown, an Ethiopian/Bermudian with southern roots, whose voice reveals a sultriness and sweetness that has captivated listeners. A musician who plays the guitar and ukulele, Rachel embodies with her African/Caribbean band, the genres of pop, Caribbean, Hawaiian, country, hip-hop and world sounds into a captivating groove.
At 19, with no formal musical training, Brown found her voice organically. “My songwriting process consists of grabbing my guitar and learning how to play it while I write songs,” says Brown. “I just play until it sounds right.”
Brown was the 2010 recipient of the prestigious ASCAP Foundation Robert Allen Award for songwriting as well as a 2011 recipient of the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Abe Olman Award for Excellence in Songwriting. She also received a very coveted showcase slot at the National Association for Campus Activities’ national convention, leading to a 40 date college tour.
The Harvard graduate has been featured by the New York Post and PerezHilton.com and has opened for the likes of Mary J. Blige and Robin Thicke at Bermuda’s National Stadium, and John Legend and Quincy Jones at the Bermuda Music Festival.
Brown’s music also caught the ear of Wyclef Jean who brought her up on stage to perform an impromptu duet of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” at a fundraiser held at New York’s legendary Cipriani 42 Street. Recently Jean joined Brown onstage at her residency at NYC’s famed supper club, The Darby.
Be sure to catch Brown’s debut EP “Building Castles” which is available now.
