When we think about marketing, public speaking isn’t very high on the list, but public speaking can help you market your business to new heights because it elevates your expert status, boosts your personal brand or business, and it makes you memorable. On today’s show we will be covering how to get over the fear of speaking in front of others, and one organization in particular that has transformed fear into confidence for millions of people worldwide when it comes to speaking in public.
Hosted by Françoise Rose Jeanes, founder of Mobile Marketing Max, today's show features Barney Barnum.
More about Françoise: Françoise is the president and founder of Mobile Marketing Max, a marketing agency that provides strategic mobile and marketing solutions to corporations, non-profits and entrepreneurs. Françoise educates businesses on trends and strategies to increase their exposure, get more leads, more customers, and ultimately, more sales.
Originally from London, England, Françoise now calls North Carolina her home where she lives with her husband, daughter, thirteen ducks and two dogs.
More about Barney: Barney has over 30 years of expertise in successful sales, sales training, and client development in a broad range of industries including pharmaceutical, manufacturing, and financial industries. And for the last 20 of those years he has helped thousands overcome their fear of public speaking as a Toastmaster and is a Past District Governor for North Carolina with Toastmasters.
Keith Williamson from Greensboro NC is the organizer of Heart and Soul Speaking Group in Greensboro NC.
He talks about his journey of overcoming the fear of public speaking.
Speaking in public is one of the most common fears that we have and Keith Williamson will share how he turned it into motivation and has since started his own speaking group to help others also combat their fears.
It's time to get over this fear of public speaking. You live in a world of media now. The chances of you ending up on film or having your voice recorded and played in public are outrageously large.
We're going to kill the misconceptions that make people hate the idea of public speaking.
When this show is over, if you listened closely, you will not have a fear of public speaking anymore. This fear is a bully, and tonight, we are going to kick its ass rather thoroughly and promptly.
Show notes: the correlation that I mentioned but did not follow up on was this--the fact that I do my shows (so far) without notes or preparation except for thinking is a testament to the fact that if you're open, honest, and at least semi-knowledgeable about your topic, MY broadcast is the WORST you can get, and from feedback I've seen, it isn't bad 'tall. You, on the other hand, WILL have notes (cards) presumably--I'd advise against them and just say go with it, since it allows for realism and spontaneity (something else people are terrified of) but to be safe and to be sure, you'll have your notes, so you'll be BETTER than me in this broadcast, and that should be more than good enough!
On this episode we are talking about ways to overcome the fear of public speaking.
Krista and Wendy highlight the unexpected benefits of joining Toastmasters. It can help you in several areas of your life, from speaking at your next Family Readiness Group meeting, to networking for a new job, preparing for a job interview and even preparing to give that training session. Toastmasters isn't just for "aspiring public speakers", it is for everyone!
Do you feel confident in answering the question: "Tell me a little more about yourself?"

What is it about the sensation of having all eyes on us that intimidates so many? Are others judging us, or are we self-consciously judging ourselves? It's definitely some of both. Yet the truth is either we take command of the audience or the audience takes command of us! Being an engaging speaker is not difficult. It just includes incorporating a few key elements into our presentations. Our guest Allison Shapira, will advise what these elements are, and how to present successfully. Allison Shapira currently teaches in executive leadership programs at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. She also teaches public speaking - both privately and through group workshops - for international organizations, federal agencies and private companies.
