Global Product Management Talk is pleased to bring you episode 012 of...
The Everyday Innovator with host Chad McAllister, PhD.
The podcast is all about helping people involved in developing and managing products become more successful, grow their careers, and STANDOUT from their peers.
Our Guest: David Paulson has over 20 years of product development experience and still remembers his first day at work. That’s when he found out how inefficient the product development process was. He’s been working to fix that ever since.
Highlights from the discussion include:
Apply Lean product development to cut time to market in half and create successful products – something all innovators want to know how to accomplish!
Lean has many different definitions, but in the product development context, it has three specific characteristics: (1) focus on value to the customer, (2) rapidly learn, and (3) maximize desired results while minimizing effort.
In addition to the benefits of creating more profitable products, applying Lean product development also impacts the organizational culture, resulting in happier and more effective employees.
First time David applied Lean product development to a project, the time-to-market decreased from the expected 30 months to 12 months, finished 20% under budget, and generated an additional $3 million profit by being early to market.
Good books on the topic of Lean product development are from Don Reinersten, including “Managing the Design Factory” and “The Principles of Product Development Flow.” Read “Managing the Design Factory” first.

Hour one: Losing The Signal. Sean Silcoff, Journalist for the Globe and Mail.
Losing the Signal is a riveting story of a company that toppled global giants before succumbing to the ruthlessly competitive forces of Silicon Valley. This is not a conventional tale of modern business failure by fraud and greed.
Hour two: MHOX. Filippo Nassetti, MHOX partner and lead designer, Communication manager.
MHOX is a product design studio. They work with companies and brands to innovate their products and communication, providing services of industrial design, product communication, research and development. MHOX began as a research group focusing on generative design and 3D printing technologies for the design of innovative wearable products, and evolved into a more general design consultancy. Since 2012 they deliver both disruptive concepts and commercial products for the fashion and medical industry, from masks to prostheses, fashion accessories to orthoses, bracelets to EYEs. A reflection on the human body, its symbiosis with technology, its evolution in possible futures is central to MHOX work. Wearable products are body extensions, objects or systems that integrate the human body to mutate its aesthetic and functional potential, and this concept is constantly brought to its limit.

About the Book
When you hear a doctor say “If you don’t have massive blood transfusions now, you’ll die before morning” you know you’re in trouble. These words began a difficult journey as doctors tried to save my life after a massive bacterial infection invaded my body. It had eaten away portions of the lower discs and vertebrae in my spine, destroyed a kidney and gave me brain damage. Months in hospital, many more in a full body cast (from neck to knee) and two years to learn to walk again, speak more than three words in a sentence and get brain function back – plus rebuild a life with my young children. But this isn’t a sad story. I am taking you on a raw, authentic and emotional trek through losing my children, nearly dying, losing my home and having to regain skills and rebuild a life for my family. This is a story of hope and inspiration. I have taken each negative and turned it into a life lesson that anyone can apply every day to live a fuller life. My wish is that this book gives you hope!
