Over the Top Radio - US Pro Cycling Challenge with Benjamin Day

    in Fitness

I was unable to write "...with United Health Care Cycling team's Benjamin Day" this time as Ben formally retired from professional racing following yesterday's final stage of the US Pro Cycling Challenge.  After a 17 year racing career, Ben decided it was time to focus on his coaching business 'Day by Day Coaching'.  Ben will give us his final recap of the 2014 USPCC. It was an understandably emotional finish for Day but he's excited about the future.

Over the Top Cycling - The Boothby Challenge

    in Fitness

A group of Seattle Randonneurs decided to create an unofficial challenge to honor the memory of one of their own, Don Boothby, who passed away before he got a chance to complete a 300k ride every month of the year, Hence the Boothby Challenge was created.
4 riders completed it in 2014

Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. Participation in randonneuring events is part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie and perseverance are the hallmarks of randonneuring.

Over the Top Cycling - Robin Farina interviews Ally Stacher

    in Fitness

Ally Stacher is a professional cyclist with Specialized-Lululemon. She's a support rider who does everything she possibly can do to help her team succeed.  Stacher

inherited a love of homemade juicing from her aunt, who bought her a Jack LaLanne juicer during her sophomore year of college. “I was instantly hooked,” she says. “My roommate and I started juicing like crazy.”

It’s a habit that Stacher continues today—even while on the road. “I was traveling with a little Omega juicer,” she says. “It was perfect—it fit into my backpack so I never had to put it in my checked bag. Then the travel got to it and it died on me. It was an incredibly sad day. I now travel with a Breville juicer my teammate bought me for my birthday. It’s pretty easy to lug around. I will say, though, when you go through security with a juicer in your backpack it tends to set off the alarm.”

Stacher claims to be a frugal juicer—“I don’t do too many add-ins…the occasional wheat grass, but that’s about it.”—but admits to being crazy for beets. And for good reason: Research show that drinking beetroot juice can boost a cyclist’s endurance. In one study, volunteers were able to ride about a minute and a half longer compared to when they drank a placebo. Ninety-two seconds may not seem like a lot, but in the world of professional cycling, it’s more than enough to separate the winners from the losers.

Over the Top Radio - US Pro Cycling Challenge Stage 5 with Benjamin Day

    in Fitness

United Health Care Cycling Team's Benjamin Day joins us to discuss Stage 5 of the US Pro Cycling Challenge.  This stage’s serene first 80 miles hide a vicious finish and a last chance for climbing specialists to really make a move. Starting in the new host community of Woodland Park, Stage 5 heads west then north through some of the most picturesque terrain in Colorado. A quiet run through the Pike National Forest on Tarryall Rd., which was unpaved until just last year, and the riders will christen it properly with high speeds and lots of breakaway attempts. The action really starts when the race hits Fairplay and begins the long grind up 11,500 ft. Hoosier Pass, the highest point in the race. Then it is on to Breckenridge, where last year’s challenging finish up Moonstone Rd. will be repeated again. This nasty little climb can kill a break or launch a winner.

Over the Top Radio - US Pro Cycling Challenge Stage 1 with UHC's Ben Day

    in Fitness

United Health Care's Ben Day checks in from the US Pro Cycling Challenge with Stage 1 details.  Stage 1 is the Aspen Circuit Race.  The Aspen/Snowmass Circuit may be short on distance, but it packs a punch. At 65 miles (3 laps of nearly 22 miles each), and 2,300 ft. of climbing per lap with minimal recovery, this circuit puts the “challenge” in USA Pro Challenge. Each lap will see the riders grind up to Snowmass Village, then a quick descent leads to two short but steep climbs, and a quick loop through downtown before doing it all again. Pair that with a starting elevation of 7,900 ft. and you have one tough opening day.

Over the Top Radio - US Pro Cycling Challenge with Garmin Sharp's Gavin Mannion

    in Fitness

Gavin Mannion - the newest member of Team Garmin Sharp - joins us this evening for a look at Stage 2 of the US Pro Cycling Challenge.  Alex Howes of Garmin Sharp took possession of the Leader's Jersey today racing through some truly awful weather conditions.  Stage 2 opened fast by ripping down the Aspen Valley through the sprint cities of Basalt and Carbondale before tackling the 8,700 ft. McClure Pass. A short descent brings the race to Gunnison County road 12, which is a 20-mile rollercoaster that constantly changes from pavement to dirt and back again, while topping out at 9,900 ft. over Kebler Pass. A technical descent into Crested Butte brings the race back to familiar terrain. As in 2011 and 2012, the race will finish up with a sprint through downtown Crested Butte and the steep finish climb up to Mt. Crested Butte.

Over the Top Cycling - Lon Haldeman discusses the Ghana and Elite PAC Tours

    in Fitness

Ultracycling legend Lon Haldeman joins us to talk about his recent PAC Tour in Ghana as well as the upcoming Elite PAC Tour.

The fastest transcontinental bike tour ever! PAC Tour's first Elite Tour was in 1995 and has been going strong ever since!

Daily miles range from 140 to 196 miles per day. Riders completing 100% of the tour will qualify for the Race Across AMerica. This extremem cross country bike tour intended for the most serious riders who are looking for a very challenging ride across America.    All riders must routinely ride 200 miles in 10-12 hours in training. An Elite Team Division is being offered for two riders to share participating by individually riding 80-120 miles each day.

This Elite Tour begins in San Diego, California with moderate daily distances the first three days while crossing the desert.  We hope all riders will be able to gradually work themselves into shape before they begin the longer days for the remainder of the tour.  The route will use a combination of good cycling roads we have ridden for many years.

This is not an easy cross-country route following the boring flat lands of the Southern states.  We will intentionally climb many steep mountain grades in Arizona and New Mexico.  In the eastern states we will ride many hilly days including the notorious Talimena Parkway which includes many 15% grades.

This cross country bicycle tour is only for the best riders. Do not come on this tour if you are looking for an easy ride across the country. Even the fastest riders will be tested to their limits on most days.
