    Self-Reliant Living

    in Self Help

This show first aired  - Sep 12,2012
Self-Reliant Living bySafe Harbor Alliance, hosted by Jim Phillips. Guest: Dr. Joe Gee Could There Be a Mule In Your Future Just how strong are you really, and how much work can you do by yourself?Should you find yourself living in a time and place without all of the engine powered mechanical devices we now take for granted, just how are you going to get everything done? When people think about life without the internal combustion engine the casual thought does come to mind about using large animals to help pick up the load. We've all seen the movies and documentaries about animal power. We've looked at old time photographs, read some books on the subject and might even have family stories about these work animals passed down to us. As a beginner or as a future new “homesteader” out of necessity, just which large animal should you consider: horse, donkey, mule, lama, ox? Each has advantages and disadvantages to consider, and now is the time to get your education and planning started. Dr. Joe Gee is a retired Orthodontist neighbor of mine with a high level of interest in making provisions for the future, no matter what it might bring. Years before he moved to our little community and settled in to a new provident-living lifestyle, he and his wife were riding and packing mules. He started out with horses, but 15 years ago, after recognizing the advantages of the mule, made the switch and now rides and packs them regularly. He works with and uses these sturdy animals more than once a week, so his personal experience runs quite deep. His respect, trust and admiration of what was once the real “workhorse” of this nation is quickly recognized.

    Self Reliant Living

    in Self Help

This show first aired - Jan 23,2013
Winter Safety Made Real – Part 2 Presented in Part-1 of Winter Safety Made Real was the footing for this whole WSMR series: the purpose and approach to winter safety, along with “Why Winter Experiences Fail”, “The Taboos of Cold Weather”, “The Wives Tales of Winter”, and An Introduction to PALS™. Part-2 will present more fully the key points and performance possibilities using PALS™ (the Phillips Arctic Living System™) and why Jim does what he does and the benefit it can bring others. One of the most important parts in this presentation will be the in depth explanation of the bodys physiological response to the cold and the key steps to keeping hands and feet warm. Possessing this understanding alone can dramatically change a persons comfort and safety in the cold. Jim Phillips is a nationally known speaker and teacher who has professionally taught thousands of classes all across the United States for 40 years. For a number of years prior to this career, his hobby was teaching cold weather safety & survival. Jim is a strong advocate of self-reliance living and family preparedness. He developed an entire preparedness curriculum by asking himself the question "What if?" and then setting out to discover what actually does and does not work. The answers he seeks (and then teaches) must be based on true principles derived from first hand experience. Above all else, he believes that attitude and practical knowledge is more critical to survival than having a bunch of "stuff." (“Who you are and what you know is far more important than what you have.”) Learn More About Jim
