Natalie Baszile's Queen Sugar picked up by OWN; Baszile talks craft on 3/1

    in Writing

It is with great Behind the Prose pride that I share awesome news about Natalie Baszile's first novel. Queen Sugar is moving to Oprah Winfrey's OWN network under the helm of "Selma" director Ava DuVernay.

I am proud, but I'm not surprised. Days before the news broke, I wrote "If there ever was a novel that surely will be a movie, Queen Sugar is it."

I met Natalie at the 2012 VONA Voices Workshop. In a nonfiction workshop taught by Faith Adiele, I had the pleasure of reading excerpts of Natalie's memoir in progress. The same rhetorical qualities that endeared me to her writing are earning her praise in a number of reviews: eloquence, description, and confidence.

But in the words of the first book reviewer I knew, "Don't take my word for it."

The Race Trim MotorSports Hour #19

    in Sports

It’s another rare Friday where the guys are forced to keep the Frat House Sports Garage open late – just too much work to do before tomorrow’s Saturday night NASCAR racing at Richmond International Raceway.

First though we're looking back over last Sunday’s “Bristol Marathon” which saw 11 cautions, four rain delays, and a G-W-C finish. Matt Kenseth picked up his first checkered since 2013 while the “Pesky Boys” were wrecking each other and Denny Hamlin, with sudden mysterious neck pain, was replaced with wunderkind Erik Jones. What to make of it all? The “guys in the garage” are chatting it up.

We’ve got rare Saturday night racing at Richmond and we’ll have our own Brandon on the ground track-side. While drivers like Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin have a history here, could we see Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart get their first win of the season?

There’s drag racing going on this weekend at the Royal Purple Raceway, and Frat House Mike will be updating NHRA in his report on activities in Houston.

Uncle Mark is going Over the Wall; Sidekick’s got his Fantasy picks; and the rest of the guys are jumping in with their Eat-My-Dust Picks!

    As it’s Friday night, we’ve got the beer . . . if you’re stopping by, you bring the pizza . . . and your comments to the Frat House Sports Garage . . . by giving a call to 347 - 826 - 9964!

    in Entertainment

Douglas County District Attorney David McDade announced today that his office successfully prosecuted Kevin Upkins, a 29 year old Fulton County man, after a jury found him guilty of armed robbery this week.  The charges stemmed from a May 2, 2008 incident at Security Finance on Fairburn Road.

According to evidence presented at trial by Assistant District Attorney Jeff Gore, Upkins robbed Security Finance of approximately $3,000 after ordering a female employee to the floor at gunpoint.  When Upkins grabbed the cash out of a drawer in the business, he also picked up several checks that had been placed on top of the larger bills.

Within minutes of the robbery, Sergeant Todd Garner of the Douglasville Police Department responded to the scene and recovered three checks that Upkins had dropped on the floor of the business.  Upkins was later identified through his fingerprints located on two of these checks.  His fingerprints were on file from previous felony arrests in Atlanta, But is that what really happen? Brad Absher, Amanda Fish, 2 Couch Kid New Musics - Hank Mowery & Peter Novelli

    in Music

SHOW # 266 - Live, Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With "Musicians You Should Know"

Brad Absher is out of Houston, Texas and he and his band, Swamp Royale, have been a fixture on the Gulf Coast for over 20 years and he has appeared at the IBC getting to the finals. His new album is entitled Lucky Dog and Brad and I will explore his musical journey and speak about the album and where the band is headed next.

I got to meet Amanda Fish at the IBC this past January.  She was in town to just meet people, play a little and let people know about her new album, Down In The Dirt.   She actually gave me a self-burned copy of the master of the album when we chatted On The Couch. I knew I had to bring her onto a Monday show and show some love, because the album is great.  In March, Vizztone picked her up, so if you don’t know about Samantha’s big sister now, you will soon!  And this is also the first set of siblings we have had on the show!

Hank Mowery first sat on The Couch back in October of 2013.  He is back on a Couch Kid New Music Segment for his new release Excuses Plenty and we will talk about what Hank and The Hawktones have been up to since we last spoke and share this hot off the presses release with you.

Back in July of 2014, Peter Novelli came and sat On The Couch for a Couch Kid New Music Segment and shared PRE-MASTERS for his upcoming album, St. Amant Sessions.  Well, the album is finally done and Peter had his CD Release in the Dominican Republic last week and this week we get to share the finished product and maybe even compare a song or two from back in July!

Cary Crittendon Falsely Charged/ Also: Doug Franks /Florida Guardianship Issues

    in Politics

Join us this evening as we expose the persecution and false charges levied against Cary Crittendon in California.  Cary is currently held at Elmwood Correctional Facility charged with parole violations (non-specific).  A May 4th hearing has been scheduled to allow the prosecutor time to fabricate other charges.  The intent? To sentence Cary to a long period in prison for exposing the corruption of a sitting judge with a long history of corruption.

Later in the show:  Doug Franks will join us to talk about the recent victim's symposium that took place in Florida where families that had been targeted had an actual opportunity to speak at length about the abuses they had endured at the hands of predatory guardians and the infamous BAR Association, along with the corruption of the probate courts facilitated by hand-picked "judges".

    Should be an interesting show!

Third Eye Cinema 4/19/15 with Chris Impelliteri

    in Entertainment

Next time on Third Eye Cinema: one of the premier names in old school speed metal shred guitar!

Working alongside Rainbow, MSG and Alcatrazz frontman Graham Bonnett, he blazed his way onto the 80's metal scene with the somewhat uncharacteristic Stand In Line, making enough of a name for himself to release his own REH instructional video Speed Soloing before seemingly vanishing from the scene thereafter.

After spending a full two decades producing quality, effectively Christian metal albums solely available as imports from the RCA Victor Japan label with original vocalist Rob Rock (Angelica, M.A.R.S. Project Driver) and Chastain/Fifth Angel drummer Ken Mary, he’s returned to domestic shores courtesy of Frontiers records.

With a blazing new album evoking the sound and style of classic 80's L.A. style metal and some blazing, sweep picked arpeggiation and fiery 32nd note runs still marked by a strong grounding in melodic structure and classic song construction, Impelliteri appears to be poised for their first U.S. breakthrough in decades (and their first domestic release with longtime vocalist Rock in the drivers' seat)!

Join us as we speak to one of the great shredders, the legendary Chris Impelliteri, only here on Third Eye Cinema!
