Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Pianist/Composer Romain Collin!

    in Music

When we last spoke to the inside/out beautiful Romain Collin, he was immersed in another project. That's the correct term: immersed.  When listening to the way he offers music, there is the distinct feeling that Romain had nothing else on his mind but living the chords he was playing.  You can almost see him: eyes closed, smiling at memories - or hope from an anticipated time, savoring the life captured in five minutes worth of piano resuscitation.

Our guest just celebrated his birthday.  He's young - not yet 40 - but Romain has lived much longer than that.  The echoes of other times linger in his songs.  Beautifully scary.  Right on time for Halloween :)  We'll have to ask if that event is celebrated in France, the country of his birth.  What the French celebrate for SURE: education.  And a beloved transplant knows all about that.  At Berklee first (scholarship), he was then accepted at the Monk Institute (another scholarship!).  During that time, he was fortunate to be able to tour with two key legends who oversee admissions into the school: Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.  He also studied with Ron Carter, Charlie Haden and Mulgrew Miller.

2008 saw his debut "stick" with Jazz critics.  "The Rise and Fall of Pipokuhn" created a reverberation throughout the community - and Romain was invited to join the esteemed Marian McPartland on her popular "Jazz Piano" radio show.  In 2012, this "visionary" (NPR) joined us on the show to tell us about "The Calling" - which resulted in more praise from those who don't tend to do so.  Orchestral film scoring - and playing with Christian McBride and Lauryn Hill (among others) - kept him busy every single day.  But his eye was on a third album - and here it is.  Join us for a discussion of "Press Enter!" 10/29 :)

Kori Linae Carothers - Award-Winning Pianist and Composer

    in Music

Kori’s saga is filled with a love affair for music. Kori grew up with 100% hearing loss in her left ear, which has not stopped her from pursuing her musical career. She is a classically trained pianist, and composes all of her music. Kori’s song “Carpe Diem – Featuring Aeone” won the 2012 Independent Music Award for Best New Age Song. Kori’s album “Trillium” was nominated Zone Music Reporters 2009 Awards “Album of the Year” and “Best Contemporary Instrumental Album”. Lately, she has been diagnosed with a vocal disorder, which has stopped her from singing, however, she still can “sing” with her fingers using her main instrument, the piano. Kori lives in Southern California with her husband, 4 children, a cat, dog, bunny and her eyes are midnight blue.

“Kori Carothers is, without question a brilliant pianist and composer. What sets her apart, however, is the broad range of styles she utilizes so gracefully. Kori moves between the worlds of achingly beautiful acoustic piano composition and lavish keyboard production with remarkable ease. The result “Trillium”, a cohesive collection of compositions of stunning breadth and dynamic range, confidently held together by her singular musical voice. ~Will Ackerman, Windham County, VT May 2009

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Renee Rosnes!

    in Music

You may have just viewed a brief description of Renee Rosnes within the parameters of this page.  Trust and believe, you cannot be BRIEF when describing her talent!  She has been noted as both pianist and composer for a long time - and we bless the day that she moved to New York from Vancouver in order to facilitate her reputation :)

Renee is also an arranger - please make note.  And she is The "Go-To" goddess on keys for the filet mignon of artists within Jazz circles.  Joe Henderson, Buster Williams, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson.  They'll TELL you.  James Moody asked her to join his elite circle of musical friends in 1989.  Renee was with his band until his passing in 2010.

As well as her own endeavors, Renee has taken part in grand events that would exhaust mere mortals.  She has been music director for prestigious affairs (one in particular comes to mind to honor her late, beloved boss, James Moody).  She has produced at Lincoln Center, has been involved with the SF Jazz Collective, has interviewed for the "Jazz Times", and has hosted her own radio show for Canada's CBC.

Please let her website do the talking, though.  One perusal at her "performances" page and you'll see the kinds of company that she keeps.  With Jimmy Greene, with Cecile McLoren Salvant, Anat Cohen, Ingrid Jensen, Terri Lyne Carrington, and a mainstay in her life: Ron Carter.  One of the most wonderful decisions that Renee has made in her career is to consciously seek out those with whom she has a connection - rare legends have asserted that they have a connection with RENEE.  It's no surprise that this amazingly intuitive artist has won multiple Juno Awards.  With a birthday coming in March - and with all of these fabulous CD release shows, there is MUCH to celebrate!  Join us on 2/9 - and we'll do JUST that!
