Want Better Work Team Conflict Management? Begin by Assessing “Conflict Climate

    in Business

Why do old, dysfunctional patterns for handling conflict re-emerge and persist in the workplace, even after providing training, policies or procedures for resolving differences constructively? This vexing phenomenon—a return to the status quo--plagues conflict professionals and team leaders alike. The main culprit is not individuals clashing; instead it is the team’s culture—the social environment—which sets communication patterns and strongly influences how members behave when they encounter conflict. But how do we get a handle on conflict at the work team level? First we need to concretely assess a team’s “conflict climate” and then take steps to improve aspects of the climate that are negatively influencing members’ conflict behavior. In this program Michael Dues will discuss a powerful online instrument for diagnosing conflict climate in the workplace. He will describe what it measures, how it can guide interventions to gain long term, sustainable improvement in conflict management, and why it is especially useful to use an online survey for this purpose.

Michael Dues:   Former Head of the Department of Communication at The University of Arizona, Dr. Dues has extensive experience as an organizational ombudsman and management consultant.  He is a Senior Partner at conflictclimate.com.  He pioneered the concept of “conflict climate.”  His recorded lecture course, “The Art of Conflict Management,” (in The Teaching Company’s “Great Courses” series) has been widely distributed throughout the English-speaking world.

Black Survival Guide 2015 and Beyond

    in Self Help

Our society is divided.  The racism many of us thought had ended has now sprung back to life with the force of a hurricane.  Video cameras on cell phones have brought the attacks on people of color by the police force right into our living rooms.  People are struggling to understand what is going on as the congress holds the country hostage to push through budget cuts for social programs and tax cuts for large corparations.  They can do this because there is a black president that they have sworn to make fail from his first day in the White House.  We are a country in trouble.  How does this racism persist for so long?  We will explore this together has we explore system dynamics and how they work.

The Therapeutic Aha with Courtney Armstrong

    in Spirituality

Courtney Armstrong’s The Therapeutic “Aha!” explores the thrilling and rare moment when a client reaches an elusive realization, allowing them to make meaningful change. In 10 straightforward strategies, this practical book demonstrates how to shake things up in therapy when a client is stuck or stalled to jumpstart progress. Readers will learn how to spark the “emotional brain”—the part of the brain that houses automatic, unconscious patterns—and create new neural pathways that engage and advance the healing process.

Divided into three parts—(1) Awakening a Session, (2) Healing Emotional Wounds, and (3) Activating Experiential Change—the book walks readers through specific techniques for harnessing the emotional brain and re-patterning its routine. Elegant therapeutic insights and coping strategies only go so far; until we intervene with something our emotional brain can understand—a compelling felt experience—old, established neural patterns will persist. The brain-based strategies Armstrong presents include how to enliven the therapeutic alliance; elicit exciting goals; identify the root of an emotional conflict; reverse trauma with memory reconsolidation; invoke inspirational imagery; and use stories, humor, music, poetry, and even mindfulness to induce change.
