When we are active in an addiction, we can feel like there is no one else in the whole world like us. “Alcoholics are screw ups and losers,” we tell ourselves, “whereas I seemed to have developed this drinking problem in spite of doing everything else in my life to a high level of excellence. I am the most unlikely alcoholic ever.” In fact, alcoholics share many common personality traits, and surprisingly that includes perfectionism. On this episode we discuss the various ways perfectionism can manifest in our lives, why it is so common to those who struggle with addiction, and some suggestions for easing perfectionist ways.
Psychology Today makes an interesting statement, "For perfectionists, life is an endless report card on accomplishments or looks. It is a fast track to unhappiness... What makes perfectionism so toxic is that while those in its grip desire success, they are most focused on avoiding failure..."
On our last show we began to discover the signs, symptoms, strengths and weaknesses of perfectionism. We discussed the importance of examining the positive and negative aspects of perfectionism, identifying the areas of weakness, and bringing our challenges to God in order to better move towards living a life free from the strains of performance.
On this show we will pick up right where we left off to continue our journey to a happier, healthy, and balanced life in Christ.

Have you ever heard of the phrase, "Behavioral continuum?" Don't worry, most people have not. A continuum is where there are distinct extremes on opposite sides of a spectrum. In behavioral continuum can be viewed as a behavior that swings drastically either way past a neutral state. Perfectionism is best understood by describing it as a behavioral continuum where the behavior on either end of the continuum (spectrum) is excessive. Most people picture perfectionism as a good thing. They see ambitious goals being met, promptness, attention to detail and high expectations achieved. Yet if we were to peer at the motivation behind the behaviors it might tell a darker story, a story that may need to be addressed.
