Mike Mauti was named 2012 All-Big Ten First Team. Mauti personifies Penn State's famed 'LinebackerU' motto. A co-captain, Mauti was presented the first Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year award this season. Injuries have clouded NFL Scouts judgement of his durability on the field, but when healthy there are few who match his competitiveness at the position. Matt Gajtka and Larry Snyder bring you all the latest news and opinion on their favorite sport in this edition of the Gospel of Hockey. This week, Matt and Larry welcome Mary Clarke, Penn State hockey reporter for the FanSided blog Victory Bell Rings to discuss the state of both men's and women's teams in Happy Valley. How has the PSU community responded to Division I hockey on campus at the beautiful new Pegula Ice Arena? What can we expect from both teams as the season gets going and conference play approaches? Matt and Larry also deliver their Local Hockey Report to close the program.
Men residing at the infamous institution speak out regarding retaliation, abuse and neglect. Why is the patient population of Coalinga State Hospital being treated so horrifically? Could it be that there is no "watchdog" overseeing the institution, as there is for prisons and other patients--those who are deemed mentally ill? Why isn't there a specific policy spelled out for the "SVP" population, as there is for people in prison (Title 15)? Why does it seem that the few "bad apples," whether staff or officers, are not fired--but in many cases, promoted? Why does a facility like this one have an astronomical budget (spending over $3 billion in California taxpayer dollars since the infamous institution opened its doors), yet very little media/public information released? Is it possible--do CSH employees really not have to pass the same psychiatric exam that CDCR employees do?
CSH News explores these important issues and more...
NOTE: This episode was rescheduled from last Thursday.
Employers are rapidly moving away from incentives and toward penalties as they grapple with creating and supporting healthier behaviors. Employees incur these when an action isn't taken, and at an increasing number of companies, the penalties are assessed when employees don't meet certain health standards (BMI, cholesterol, etc.). According to the 2013 National Business Group on Health/Towers Watson survey on employer practices, 16% of employers already tie incentives to health standards and another 31% expect to do so.
On today's show we'll talk about this shift with one of the foremost researchers in the area of workplace wellness, Dr. Dee Edington. We'll also be joined by a professor who penned a call to arms against Penn State's $100 a month surcharge, Matthew Woessner.
Hear from witnesses to the seclusion and restraint of a Coalinga State Hospital patient, Riccardo King, who was forcibly medicated and tied down to a bed for a few weeks. The man was unable to understand commands, yet was being verbally and physically abused. Another sad story of abuse/neglect at CSH is presented.
Then, hear from a man who successfully exited CSH in 2012, when his "SVP" case was dropped in Los Angeles County court. Clem reports in and discusses his life now, in Texas.
