Ep 113: Paul Smith on Storytelling Skills for Leaders

    in Books

Join Angela Lauria of The Author Incubator as she interviews Paul Smith, keynote speaker, trainer, and author on the publishing of one of his books, Lead with a Story: A Guide to Crafting Business Narratives that Captivate, Convince, and Inspire.

From the start, Paul’s goal in writing the book was to make it a primary marketing vehicle for launching his speaking and training career. So with this goal in mind, he chose to work with a traditional publisher because he needed a book that would sell widely, but not necessarily be his main source of income. He credits his publisher for the great marketing efforts they made for his book which he said he couldn’t have done on his own. Through their well-connected PR department, he was able to get publicity for his book in leading business magazines like Forbes, Inc., Time, and in Wall Street Journal. They also have a sales force that sells his books to all the bookstores in the country and even got his book sold to different publishers around the world.  Paul was pleasantly surprised by the success of his book which is now on its seventh printing and has been translated into six or seven languages around the world.

    in Lifestyle

Author of the very well received business book Lead with a Story and devoted father, Paul Smith shares the answer—and a wealth of resource material for parents—in his new book, PARENTING WITH A STORY: Real-Life Lessons in Character for Parents and Children to Share. Based on extensive research into storytelling and years of experience with children, including his two sons, Smith demonstrates the power of a great personal story to reach and teach children—

Drawn from the author’s yearlong process of interviewing people from all over the world, across a wide spectrum of ages, races, and life circumstances, and in an astonishing variety of fields and professions, PARENTING WITH A STORY presents a story collection

With the help of uplifting, humorous, heartbreaking, and deeply touching stories, parents—and grandparents, aunts, uncles, counselors, pastors, and mentors—will impart lived wisdom and valuable guidance to children on:

    • Ambition—including the importance of not only setting worthy goals, but also letting go of unhealthy ones, illustrated by the story of a young woman whose obsession with dressing for corporate success nearly cost her a fulfilling career.

    • Open-mindedness—driven home by the hilarious story of a man’s awakening to seeing others’ perspectives after recovering from the embarrassment of stumbling into a stall in the ladies room.

    • Kindness—opening with the story of what motivated Kristin Pedemonti to start traveling to major cities around the world simply to sit on the sidewalk holding a cardboard sign with a handwritten message, “Free Hugs.”

    The Mary Priddy Story Live

    in Christianity

That's it. Love conquers all." Mary Priddy's journey is an emotional story that shows the power of Christ in every way. Her countless times escaping what seemed to be inevitable death, swirl around her mind as faint yet still vivid memories - coming and going, from clarity to confusion.

Speaking with her as she unloads years of struggle and pain - you'd never know those dark years exist. She sits, smiles, and calmly breathes. She shares graphic details and startling memories with a rhythmic pace and warm hum to her voice, a peace that can only be found in Christ.

As she prepares to move into her first apartment with her two daughters, she can typically be found working at the local hospital, hanging out at the house where she and her family currently reside, or attending her home church. She is a woman of endless joy who has faced extreme sorrow and yearns to make her story known. "Even if this just helps one person. That's enough. That's worth it." Mary explains

The Power of Story: YOUR STORY

    in Psychology

In November 2014, I was honored as I was asked to provide the Fall Commencement Address for Argosy University's Schaumburg Illinois Campus.

The commencement, held at the Hemmens Auditorium in Elgin, Illinois, celebrated the Bacheloriate, Masters and Doctoral academic accomplishments of Argosy students. Many friends and family members of the students were in attendance to celebrate this remarkable achievement. And I wanted to inspire ALL, graduates and audience members, to motivate themselves to Tell Their Story!

The Power of Story is a key-note address and inspirational speech I created for the occasion. The talk encouraged all in the audience to view their own life story as a powerful inspirational tool for others and a motivational prompt for themselves.

We all have a powerful story even if we think our story is not ready for prime time. Our personal story features each of us overcoming adversity and developing perseverance in order to pursue a dream.

The Power of Story is NOT WHAT happens to you.

The Power of Story is HOW YOU RESPOND to what happens to you.

This is also the basis of most movies, television shows and our life long endevour of healing.
