Wanda's Picks Radio Show: Shakespeare @ San Quentin
Quinn DeVeaux, from Gary, Indiana, has packed houses and astounded audiences in the bay area for years with his smooth and dirty spank you voice and cool melodic songwriting. First he started an early Chicago Blues band and then a New Orleans soul and gospel band. Both groups had audiences clamoring for more. Now he has combined it all in the Blue Beat Review a self-styled crossroads of his many musical roots.Next Marin Shakespeare Company's Lesley Schisgall Currier joins us to talk about inmates at San Quentin State Prison who will have the rare opportunity to see fifteen of their peers performing in Shakespeare's problematic comedy "The Merchant of Venice," a play about commerce, love, revenge, and mercy. Under the direction of Currier and Suraya Keating, the actors have been studying the play, creating characters, learning lines, practicing fight choreography, and preparing for the performance for the past 8 months. The lead role of Shylock will be undertaken by inmate Luke Padgett, who has appeared in previous S@SQ productions as Hamlet, Malvolio, Lysander, Mercutio, Don Pedro etc. Padgett is serving a life sentence for murder, arson and robbery. She is joined by former company member, Johnathan Wilson (JW) who speaks about the transformative power of art now that he is on the other side of the prison walls. Music: Nina Simone, Leon Thomas, Meklit & Quinn.

D.W. MOFFETT
D.W. Moffett was born in Highland Park, IL, a northern suburb of Chicago. After attending Stanford University, where he majored in International Relations, he found himself back in Chicago, working as a Lending Associate in the Agribusiness Division of Continental Bank. On a whim (and perhaps a desire to leave visions of cattle-feeders in Colorado behind him) D.W. was lured to the St. Nicholas Theater Company, where he studied with, among others, William H. Macy. Shortly thereafter, having fallen in love with the stage, he became a founding member of the Remains Theatre Company. While at Remains he starred in, directed and/or produced over 40 productions including The Tooth of Crime, Moby Dick, Waiting for Godot , Woyzeck and Speed the Plow. After a long and successful career on stage in Chicago, he went with John Malkovich to do Balm In Gilead in New York City. He then starred opposite Brad Davis in Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart at the Public Theater for which he won critical acclaim. He appeared on Broadway in The Boys of Winter and The Real Thing and headlined the production of Contact at Lincoln Center in 2001. He was most recently seen on-stage playing opposite Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Ehle inThe Phialadelphia Story at the Old Vic in London. D.W. has had a long and successful career in film as well. He is most memorable in Bernardo Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty and won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Stephen Soderbergh's Traffic. He can currently be seen splitting his time on screen between Switched at Birth & Happily Divorced. He stops by to chat on Saturday, May 18, at 6pm EST.

About Christen Forster In 2011, Christen left employment as the Senior Leader of River (riverchurch.org.uk), a multi-congregation church in the Thames Valley, UK, to pursue this wider ministry full time. Growing up in the Ichthus Christian Fellowship as the son of Roger and Faith Forster, he is a second-generation leader, pastor and teacher. Christen has planted churches, mobilised youth teams, led congregations and served in mission contexts in the UK and overseas. He also has seven years valuable experience as an I.T. Consultant. In the 1990s he led Challenge 2000, a DAWN (Discipling A Whole Nation) initiative that was the catalyst for every major UK denomination to agree to place church-planting on their agenda. The keynote speaker of the 1995 Challenge 2000 Congress was Rev Dr David Yonggi Cho, then leader of the world’s largest church in Seoul, South Korea. Christen is married to Judith and has three teenage children. In his spare time he reads, plays bridge, cycles, enjoys theatre and film and spending time with his family.
