In this episode of Magical Experiments, Taylor Ellwood is joined by Crystal Blanton to discuss racism and cultural appropriation in the Pagan community. President of the World Systems Research Group, a Sr. Fellow with The August Review, & Chief Editor of Forcing Change, Carl Teichrib recently attended the 2015 Parliament of the World’s Religions, which featured notable attendees from 73 countries, representing 30 major religions and 548 sub-traditions. Learn why, as far back as 1925, Christian writer G.K. Chesterton portrayed the Parliament as "a pantheon for pantheists.” Carl provides current, firsthand information, always with an edge, to make sense of our changing world. Don’t miss Carl’s summary of clearly expressed religious trends likely to stand your hair on end!
Join RevKess & KaliSara to talk with Shanda Hahn Kinkade about her experience organizing Pagan Pride Days in a conservative area. Shanda has organized PPD in mid-Nebraska for three years and helped organize the PPD in Omaha this year.
Shanda began her journey on the Pagan Path in 1989, exploring a variety of traditions. She is an eclectic Pagan who waivers between Pantheism & Nontheism. Her practice is Grey Witchcraft with focus on balance, the 4 elements, animism, humanism, and the moon with a pinch of Hedge Witch tossed in for good measure.
She created the online group Wiccans in Nebraska (WINEB) in 2002. She joined the Rural Nebraska Witches’ Group (RNWG) via meetup.com in Mar 2007, and became co-organizer in Sept of that year. Apr 2013, she became a ritualist with Prairie Star Circle and later became lead ritualist (Jun 2013) before taking over all leading aspects Dec 2013.
Shanda has conducted workshops and classes, led group rituals, organized adult night-out events, ran a divination study group, presided over weddings, and taught a multiple-day seminar on Ritualist & Leadership training.
After a move in 2014, Shanda is still co-organizer of RNWG with most work being behind the scenes and she has remained the Local Coordinator for Kearney Area Pagan Pride. She is Secretary for the Black Hat Society of Omaha, a member of the Pagan Pride Day Omaha planning committee, and attends rituals with a local Druid Group, Prairie Shadow Grove.
We will be looking at the pagan practices that have come into the church today
KaliSara and RevKess attended the 2015 Kearney Area Pagan Pride Day outside Kearney, NE this Sunday. KaliSara presented Pagan Activism while RevKess did a two part presentation on Pagan music. In this episode you get to hear a version of those workshops and lots of great music. From the early origins of Pagan music through to some of the newest releases in that broad genre, tune in and learn a thing or two (we hope) and enjoy the music!
Featured musicians include: Wendy Rule, Damh the Bard, Murphey's Midnight Rounders, Celia, and more.
Egypt and Western Asia tell the same story. “In each case we have a standard or measuring-rod of authentic historical record,” declares Samuel Laing, “of certainly not less than 8,000 and more probably 9,000 or 10,000 years, from the present time; and in each case we find ourselves at this remote date, in the presence, not of rude beginnings, but of a civilization already ancient and far advanced. We have populous cities, celebrated temples, an organized priesthood, an advanced state of agriculture and of the industrial and fine arts; writing and books so long known that their origin is lost in myth; religions in which advanced philosophical and moral ideas are already developed; astronomical systems which imply a long course of accurate observations. How many centuries it may have taken to develop such a civilization, from the primitive beginnings of Neolithic and Paleolithic origins, is a matter of conjecture. All we can infer is, that it must have required an immense time, much longer than that embraced by the subsequent period of historical record.” (Human Origins, by Samuel Laing, p. 30, London, 1913.) ~Of these crucified saviors, the most prominent were Osiris and Horus of Egypt, Krishna of India, Mithra of Persia, Quetazlcoatl of Mexico, Adonis of Babylonia and Attis of Phrygia. Nearly all of these slain savior-gods have the following stories related about them: They are born of a virgin, on or near Dec. 25th (Christmas); their births are heralded by a star; they are born either in a cave or stable; they are slain, commonly by crucifixion; they descend into hell, and rise from the dead at the beginning of Spring (Easter), and finally ascend into heaven. The parallels between the legendary lives of these pagan messiahs and the life of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Bible are so similar that progressive Bible scholars now admit that stories of these heathen Christs have been woven into the life-story of Jesus.
This week on Cosmic Citizen (www.blogtalkradio.com/cosmiccitizen) we will be talking about the recent Parliament of World Religions which took place in Salt Lake City UTAH a few weeks ago. There were more than 100 Urantia Book Students present at the Parliament with several booths. Among them were representatives from: The Urantia Foundation, The Urantia Book Fellowship, The UAI, Truthseekers, 1God.com and United Urantia Family & Urantia Sacred Arts. Their may be others we don't know of, so if you were there, please to call in and share your experience. Sadly, none of the hosts of CC were able to be there for various reasons and we were disappointed, so we would dearly love to live vicariously through your sharing.
The Parliament covered many interesting social issues that are important to religionists, such as, Climate Change, Hate Speech, War and Violence, Income Inequality, Human Rights, Women's Dignity, Emerging Leaders and Indigenous Peoples. Some thought the event was too focused on social issues. There were speakers there like Jane Goodall, Karen Armstrong, Michael Beckwith, Marianne Williamson, and one of our favorite quests on CC, Brian McClaren. There were nearly 10,000 religionists from all over the globe in attendance! We've lined up a nice group of Urantia Book students who attended to call in this week, some who went to the Parliament for the first time and some who have attended several times. We'll hope to get their impressions and highlights and hear about what moved them and the people they met.
If you went to the Parliament or not, you will no doubt love hearing the lively reports and thoughtful feedback from various callers who went. Please call us too at 646.716.8158
