All it begins with how we feel about ourselves. Everything stems from the feelings we already feel and the things that we look for, create, bring to our lives and live in day to day. As we grow, we look back and wonder at times how we were attracted to things we were attracted to because in time, we grew, we discovered and we evolved. How is our passed linked to who we are today and what does self worth have to do with it? What are the stems of self worth, the foundation of our feelings about ourselves and how does that affect us in this very moment of our lives? This episode is a rebroadcast of a previous show - "Self Worth of Young Girls and the Media" Is the self-worth of young people, particularly young women determined by the media?
When we watch any music video, television shows, or read any of the fashion magazines, we can clearly see that the media is not very kind to girls. Today, the expectations to look a certain way are totally wild and unrealistic.

Listen to Maryann Ehman's Story. Maryann was a highly skilled and educated professional, prosecuting attorney, and ministry leader, Maryann struggled with oppressive perfectionism, shame, and worry formed early on by childhood abuse, discrimination, and abandonment. External cultural expectations on women in the workforce and the church, caused further damage to her sense of worth and value.
However, in His faithfulness, God reshaped her mindset and broke through its limitations when He put the study of His favor in front of her day after day for over a year and a half. Today Maryann leads and coaches those who believe that God has called them to more, but don’t necessarily have the clarity they need, strong sense of their value and identity, or the strategies and systems they need to implement their calling. Suffering burnout 3 time herself, she is an expert in guiding Caregivers in ways to avoid it.

After 38 years as a psychotherapist, Dr. Carol Francis notes that couples, parent-child relationships, business settings, romances, and daily conversations can be loaded with manipulations which are both helpul and harmful. In this program, we make it more clear when we are manipulating or influencing each other in a positive way (as with Andrew Carnegie's "How to Win and Influence Friends") and when emotional manipulators cause serious damage.
Emotional manipulators are individuals who try to defeat, over-take or control others by using emotionally entangling techniques. Starkely, these types of manipulations keep people in abusive relationships with violent spouses, sickening parent-child abuses, or bullying at work or in romantic relationships which turn very controlling and/or violent.
Of course, we all influence each other and in fact parents, teachers, bosses, marketing companies and advertisements can positively learn the art of manipulating their circle to create amazingly positive outcomes or connections. But emotional manipulators are typically geared to oppression, bullying, dominating, undermining, exerting some power, or bleeding a person's finances or gaining sex on demand, even rape.
This podcast, one of many on this topic, helps listeners recognize the importance of 1) self-respect, 2) self-knowledge, 3) differentiaing kindness from manipulation, 4) being clear on personal vulnerabilities that give manipulators access to your emotional bank account and more.
