Adam Bickett, one of the race favorites at the 2014 Silver State 508, joins us this evening. Adam is an ultra-cyclist based out of Southern California. He finds great value in the personal discovery and rigorous demands of long distance cycling, and hopes to show others that they also can push their own boundaries and find purpose, happiness, and fulfillment in the process.
10 years after his first double century (200 mile ride), Adam raced the 2014 Race Across the West, finishing a close second over the 880 mile course. This is the first section of, and a stepping stone toward the looming goal now on the horizon: Race Across America. RAAM is the legendary 3,000 mile transcontinental, non-stop race from Oceanside to Annapolis, Maryland that is arguably the most grueling race in the world.
Sarah Cooper brings her inspirational story to Over the Top Radio this evening. She is a stay at home mother of four (plus pets!). Her husband is an infertility doc. Sarah previously worked as an advanced care cardiac nurse practitioner until her first child was born. Now she has four and is crazy, crazy busy. She drives her coach crazy because she never sleeps enough - great home training for ultra.
Cooper is a former triathlete who whose first endurance cycling race was the 2014 Sebring 24 hour where she rode 433.8 miles (winning her division and qualifying for Raam in her first outing). Now she's facing uncharted territory on the mountainous Silver State 508 course.
Today we visit with George Vargas founder, owner and operator of the REV Endurance Cycling Team. Vargas is the only cyclist to have ever completed six consecutive solo races, including one on a fixed gear in 2007, in the race’s 30 plus year history. RECT is an organization focused on bringing up the next generation of endurance cyclists. REV is a development team with experienced coaches dedicated to taking you to the next level. As part of its rider development strategy REV is very keen on introducing more juniors and WOMEN into Ultra Cycling. REV is about making and maintaining a lifestyle change with personal health, fitness and cycling as priorities. REV will take the “couch potatoes” coach and train them to complete their very first century or Gran Fondo. REV is very interested in developing triathletes for the 70.3 triathlon events and beyond. Finally, REV is also interested in developing riders in non- competitive endurance riding as well such as brevet riding. REV will train a rider on how to be self-sufficient and self-reliant on a brevet.

Marko Baloh is currently working on his altitude training riding all the high Colorado passes in preparation for the upcoming Silver State 508. He takes time out from his training regime to speak with us on a rainy Monday. The Slovenian is one of the best in our sport and is nearly untouchable in distances up to 1,000 miles. Along with his multiple world records in the ultra distances Marko is still highly competitive in traditional bicycle racing. He is a past winner of the Furnace Creek 508 and would like nothing better than to add a victory at the Silver State 508 to his resume.
After his performance at the 2014 Race Across the West Marko Baloh of Slovenia is a heavy favorite at the Silver State 508. However, previous guests David Haase and Adam Bickett look to give him some strong competition. We visit with Marko this evening to discuss his views of the upcoming race, strengths, weaknesses and, hopefully, a bit of race insight for one of the best in the sport. Just a few of Marko's achievements:

Well I stole this description straight from the Facebook page of tonight's guest: Yes my thyroid is in the toilet and I have gained quite a bit of weight back in the last 2 years. I am done being depressed about it. This weekend I will be doing a 12 hour race at The Texas Time Trials and if I get 1/2 the miles I did 3 years ago I will be happy. Part of getting back to racing weight for me is not stressing where I am today. I accept it and will be racing in the speed suit anyway. Spandex isn't a friend to us fluffy people, but it is what it is. There is absolutely no reason not to get out there and do what you love anyway and as an added bonus I will see & support many of my friends! Michelle Beckley will be both racing, volunteering and crewing at the Texas Time Trials and is taking time out of her busy schedule to visit with us!
The old saying is 'a crew can't win the race but they can certainly lose the race'. The phrase has been used so much it's on the verge of becoming a cliche. Thing is, it's true. All too often a racer finds him or herself scrambling for crew last minute, grabbing family members, friends or whomever they can find regardless of personality or experience. We're joined today by long time ultra racer and now long time crew chief Kevin VanDyke. Kevin has run the gamut crewing for race winners as well as those eking out an official finish. As part of our fall race series we'll discuss some key points on who and what to look for in a good crew member.
This is the first of our new weely show through Flatirons Running Inc. Today we meet the owners, staff, the history of the store and, of course, running! Flatirons Running is a full-service specialty running store located in the Table Mesa Shopping Centerof one of the nations most influential running communities, Boulder, CO. The business began its inception in 2009 being called In-Step. Family-owned by RL Smith and Tricia Vieth, In-Step offered a unique and personalized experience for the runner, focusing on the world famous custom insoles built by RL. RL has become known as the Foot Whisperer to many of his clientele with his impeccable ability to diagnose foot issues and resolve aches and pains with his ‘built on location’ custom insoles, tagged with years of experience in the running and cycling arena.
In 2014, RL and Tricia were approached by Henry and Suzanne Guzman with an offer that could only extend the services to our community. With years of experience as the buyer for another running store in town, Henry came to the table with connections in the industry, extensive experience in the running world as both an athlete and a coach and a knack for knowing what the runner needs and wants which has since outfitted the newly rebranded store, now known as Flatirons Running, to be a true full-service running store.
The combination of a full line of footwear, apparel, accessories, hydration and nutritionals, along with the custom insoles by RL, this is a store that you must visit to find exactly what you need to either get started, stay on track and stay healthy as a runner/walker/hiker!

David Haase is a long time endurance bicycle racer and one of the favorites for the solo title at this year's Silver State 508. He's having a heck of a season this year with a course record at the Almanzo Alexander (385 mile Gravel Race in 32 hours, Dirty Kanza 20th place, Race Across Oregon winner, Dairyland Dare win a win at the Hoodoo 500. Dave will be the first in our Silver State 508 'Meet the Racers' series. A big thank you to the good folks at Cardo Systems, creators of the Cardo BK-1 communication system.
