Are you part of the 1 billion people in the world who have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)? How did you feel when you received your diagnosis? Were you hopeful that you would be given a treatment that would cure you of your symptoms? I know I was. However, no such thing exists.
Why? Because IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion. Your doctor has ruled out all other diseases and you’re left with a bunch of symptoms without a known cause. All of the medications available for IBS are designed to help with the symptoms; they are not designed to cure you of the underlying cause. And in my case, the medicines didn’t help.
Fortunately, that is all changing. Research is confirming that we may actually know the cause of IBS. To make the long story short, it appears that IBS may actually be SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).

Native Vermonter Marla Simpson, M.A., leads us away from negativity and illness and takes us on a journey into the higher realm of positive psychology. She explores how our focus on healing energy, love, light - in other words 'what works and what is actually healing' -- plays a critical role in the recovery journey.
In this show, Marla draws on her extensive lived experience of dual recovery from both mental health and substance use challenges. As one of the last patients evacuated from the Vermont State Hospital when hurricane Irene hit VT in 2011, Marla takes a firm stand against forced medications and coercive methods of treatment. Instead, Marla bears witness to the transformative effects of a clean and sober, health and wellness-oriented lifestyle. Striving daily to model a positive, effective voice for change and healing, Marla urges us "We are all on this journey in life together. Let's work & live in harmony, peace, & love."
A graduate of Middlebury College and Antioch University New England, Marla holds a BA in theatre and a Masters Degree in Counseling. Marla loves cooking, reading, animals, walking, arts, music, movies & spending time with her boyfriend, the love of her life. She is a passionate advocate for animal and human rights believing that 'every animal & human being deserves a safe & loving home.' Marla is a member of Governor's Standing Committee on Adult Mental Health. She works for the Vermont Support Line operated by Pathways Vermont and finds her job engaging, healing & very rewarding. Marla has traveled the world but Vermont is her favorite home.

Insurance Denial: Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Hospitalization
. Eight million of our this countries children – about 12 percent of America’s nearly 67 million citizens under the age of 18 – suffer from emotional or other mental health problems that warrant treatment. Fortunately, most of these children can be treated by a qualified professional on an outpatient basis. However, for a significant number of children, inpatient treatment may be necessary.
In recent years, there have been numerous tragedies involving individuals with mental illness, including the Sandy Hook murders of 20 students and six educators, the University of California shooting, the Virginia Tech Shooting, among others, as well as countless suicides and similar tragedies.
Help is available for those suffering from mental illness. There are therapists, medications, support groups, and for those in crisis, inpatient hospitalization. However, insurance companies have the ability to deny coverage for any and all of these options. What impact does this have on those with mental illness?
