Is it time for a Grassroots Agriculture Network?

    in Entrepreneur

My thoughts on doing a grassroots agriculture network with the goal of covering newes that both farmers and the public want to know.

In some ways very easy in others difficult.

As in there are a lot of Farm events around the Midwest that need to be covered then brought to the public  To the tech to cover them is easy, coving the cost to do so is the hard part.

Looking to see if there is support for this idea.

Matt McLean: The Future of Organic Agriculture In 2013

    in Environment

It is a new year and with it comes a whole new year of challenges for the organic industry. In 2012, although the battle to label gmo’s on food was lost due to the failure to pass Proposition 37 in the state of California, the war is not over. If anything, more people are now aware of the plight of the organic farmers, the need to buy locally grown organic and are demanding the right to know what is in their food.
What are the organic farmers doing to prevent contamination from gmo's? How is the American organic citrus market faring? How profitable is organic farming in America? What are some of the lessons learned from 2012 that will be implemented this coming year? How can we continue to support organic agriculture if we are allowing so much competition from non-organic inferior produce? How are American organic farmers coping with the ban of imports from countries that do not want produce from the USA?What are the next steps we need to take to continue to fight for gmo labeling?
Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by special guest, Matt McLean, CEO of Uncle Matts Organics to talk about what is in store for the upcoming year of organic farming. Stay tuned!
Bio: Matt McLean, president of Uncle Matt’s Organic Inc., is also the Board President of the Organic Trade Association. He has a myriad of expertise in the organic industry including marketing, distribution, farming, certification, and public policy. In 1999, Matt McLean ventured into the organic juice business with a passion for healthy living as well as a long family history of growing citrus in Florida. Matt’s goal was, and still is, to produce the highest quality juice, using only premium 100% organically-grown fruit that is free from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. His company, Uncle Matt’s Organics is the leading producer of premium certified organic citrus from Florida.

Learn Why GMO's and Organic Will Never Co-Exist

    in Food

Recently, USFDA approved a new animal drug application concerning AquAdvantage Salmon, a genetically engineered Atlantic salmon. More GE technology is expected to be approved in 2016. While the efforts in the United States for transparency have been great but is gmo labeling the way to go? Will this impact a consumer’s choice as far as paying a premium over the cheapest price for a product because of what is on the label? There is a movement in the United States to “just ban it”! In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to Barbara Peterson, about why we should ban genetically modified crops. Stay tuned!

Dr. Bob Quinn: Is There A Future For Organic Agriculture?

    in Environment

With the approval of GMO Alfalfa, GMO Sugar Beets and now GMO Corn, organic farmers are fighting harder than ever to protect their land and crops. Meanwhile, the agro-chemical companies are pleased that their profits are soaring thanks to the widespread belief that the USA is now the largest producer of GMO crops in the world. It is assumed that organic is in peril.
Why is this devastating to organic farmers? One main reason is cross-fertilization. This is especially disastrous for organic farmers because once an organic field is contaminated, the organic farmer’s certification is at risk. The organic label prohibits the use of GMO crops. Losing organic certification would mean the farmer’s goods can no longer be sold for the premium price that helps cover the costs of growing organically.
According to Farmaid.org, most GE crops hitting the market are developed by multinational companies such as Monsanto, Syngenta, Dupont and Dow Chemical to increase their sales and push their related pesticides. For example, Roundup Ready crops are all engineered to withstand Monsanto’s toxic herbicide Roundup. With Roundup Ready alfalfa and sugar beets on the market, Monsanto can expect increased profits from its new seeds, as well as increased sales of Roundup herbicide to douse all those new seeds. This has also been a core issue for the beekeeping community who has expressed concern that the combination of GMO crops with the companion technology of systemic pesticides has further devastated the rapidly declining bee population. It appears that the fate of organic farmers in the USA seems doomed but is it?
Tune in to organic farming advocate, Dr. Bob Quinn, President of Kamut® International. Bob works closely with Montana State University personnel on testing of new farming systems and new crops to provide farmers a substitute for the use of conventional fertilizer and pesticides.

What Vietnam Vets Need To Know About Agent Orange Dioxin Poisoning

    in Military

During the Vietnam War, the US military sprayed millions of gallons of Agent Orange and other herbicides on trees and vegetation. Several decades later, there were numerous concerns about the health effects due to exposure to these chemicals. One of the groups impacted by Agent Orange Dioxin poisoning is the servicemen who were at sea, often referred to as Blue Water Navy. This includes Coast Guard and Fleet Marine personnel. Although it has been over forty years, there are still so many servicemen as well as their offspring who continue to suffer due to Agent Orange Dioxin poisoning. While the United States Veterans Administration offers “eligible Veterans”, a free Agent Orange Registry health exam to assess possible long-term health problems related to exposure, gathering the information is quite a task. However, there are people out there who are doing everything they can to help our veterans get the help that they need. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to Mr. John J. Bury, a retired US Navy and Vietnam War Veteran. He is going to talk about Agent Orange Dioxin poisoning and his work as an advocate, helping others that have also been affected.

Today's show is sponsored by Molecular Bliss, a veteran owned business creating a new and unique molecular line of jewelry for both men and women in the form of neurotransmitters, which are Serotonin, Dopamine, Norepinephrine and Gaba. Pledge on this link to be entered to win a FREE piece of solid gold jewelry!
