Healthcare is dependent on the many factors that facilitate premiere quality care. From physicians to hospital directors, these factors are an essential part of improving patient care. Nurses, play a critical role in this cycle- one that is itself dependent on education and advanced skills.
In this episode we will be discussing the future of nursing as well as minority leadership. We’ll be discussing what it takes to be profiled as a Nurse Leader and how you can become a mover and shaker in nursing.
Our guest today is Deborah Washington is the Director of Diversity Patient Care Services. She is the recipient of several awards including National Finalist and Nurse of the Year for Advancing and Leading the Profession, awarded by Nursing Spectrum in 2007. Deborah holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in Nursing from Boston University and Boston College, respectively.
Here at Because Hope Matters Radio, we often talk about the integral part nurses play in helping patients heal and connecting with their caregivers. CURE Magazine takes the time to recognize exemplary oncology nurses through an "Extraordinary Healer Award." The annual recognition attracts hundreds of essay submissions from patients, survivors, and caregivers across the nation.
We're thrilled to provide another spotlight for CURE's recent award winner, Cindi Cantril. Essayist, Ann Tallman, wrote about her journey as a breast cancer survivor. Her portrayal of Cantril's care through diagnosis, surgery and treatment caught the attention of Kathy LaTour, editor-at-large at CURE Magazine. The giving, nurturing, and inspiring nature embedded in Cantril's fiber goes above and beyond. She created peer-to-peer support for patients; the "WINGS" Program helps women with all types of cancer, and a secondary WINGMEN group helps men. Cantril's drive to provide healing programs doesn't stop there; she also operates women's cancer retreats and Equine therapy.
Among more than 750 of her peers and guest speaker, actor, producer, director and best-selling author Rob Lowe, and the cancer care community, Cantril received the distinguished award. She has provided more than 40 years of research, clinical care, program development and leadership in oncology nursing care. She has published over a dozen articles and authored several chapters of Building Legacy - Voices of Oncology Nurses. Cantril also received the Oncology Nursing Society's Distinguished Service Award in 2010, among other honors on her career path.
Join us for our quarterly feature with Kathy LaTour, as we delve into the heart of oncology nursing and go above and beyond an ordinary care-watch.

School is Where Your Brain is: The Home-School Connection
Historically, learning took place throughout all aspects of a child’s life. Maybe not traditionally, maybe it’s in the distant past with the advent of school, but many made an assumption that that is where learning takes place as opposed to outside of school. Increasingly we recognize that learning really takes place regardless of where a child is. However, our educational institutions have been challenged to recognize learning, in less formal environments.
In this show we’ll look at the connection between formal and informal learning and the relationship between the institution of school and other educational opportunities.
Michael Jay and ETT Guests will contemplate the following questions:
How has the nature of homework changed in the last decade?
What is the present day relationship between formal and informal learning for pre-K 12 students?
What role do Badges and other methods of recognizing performance outside of school play in making institutional change?
For those institutions that are pursuing personalized learning what strategies are they using to incorporate the whole child into that process?
How can publishers accommodate and take advantage of these shifts (changes) in the home-school connection in their products and other offerings?
