Sabra Waldfogel grew up far from the South in Minneapolis. She studied history at Harvard University and received her Ph.D. in American History from the University of Minnesota. She has worked as a technical writer and has written about historic architecture for Old House Journal and Arts and Crafts Homes. Her short story "Yemaya” was recently published in Sixfold's January 2014 issue. Slave and Sister is her first novel.
Will they be rivals or allies? The age-old struggle between sisters is skillfully brought to life in Slave and Sister, by Sabra Waldfogel. In the antebellum South, relations between slaves and their owners are conflicted enough; if there are blood ties, the tension can become a lethal storm.
It was common in the antebellum South to raise a slave alongside the heir. But it was a surprise to both Adelaide and Rachel to discover they shared the same father. In a mesmerizing tale marked by impeccable historical accuracy, we begin by learning that scouts for General Sherman stumble upon a plantation that's anything but ordinary: it flies the Union flag and the freed slaves can read and write, and work the former plantation themselves.

On tonight's show we will be talking with Jemuel "180" Johnson about his new book "And The Tears Revived" a fiction based on fact. A powerful and emotional love story, it is about Lee, an angst-ridden, disillusioned missionary in Little Haiti treating drug addicts back to health, returning to his old neighborhood to visit a sick friend and falling back in love with his ex-girlfriend, Eosah. The first half of the book is the sensual reunion between the two, the second half of the book is a prequel going back seven years to the time they first met, up to their imminent separation. What I like about the book is that it is dialogue-heavy, with the narrator chiming in as little as possible. Johnson is also the host of TV talk show and podcast Half Circle, where he converses with millionaires, entrepreneurs, rising stars, and phenoms. He has chatted with filmmakers such as John Singleton(Boyz n the Hood), and crooners like Tony! Toni! Tone!(Anniversary). Jemuel has been amazing on the program for five years now. He isn't merely an emotional and unique writer slash novelist, but also an extrovert as a person, who loves being around people, sharing his visions, engaging folks and making them
In the words of S. Alexander:
"I love words, sunny days, stormy nights, mellow jazz, interesting people and animals .A retired broadcaster, and narrator-, my greatest joy besides writing is 'being.'
My characters are old friends, who allow me to peek in on their lives and write about it. They keep me awake nights, and I hope they do for many years to come.
I’m Brandi ‘S’ Alexander plus a few other alters; S Alexander is my primary pen name. Can’t say I’m a struggling young writer, with all the silver strands of wisdom on my head; fine ribbons of valor for staying the course (or genetics and children)! However, I am a struggling writer and loving every minute! I want you to love what I do too, but you have to read it. Once you do-, you’ll become an S Alexander novel addict! Now would I lie to you-, my potential audience, fan base, providers of my needs-, like food and shelter? Never!
I’ve never-ever made up a story. Never! My characters come to me and share their lives, then allow me to write it all down-, for you. My books aren’t biased; covers every genre from classic novel to nit-wit, faith to fantasy, obviously adult content to children’s stories.I’m a southern writer, and enjoy the ‘well-, maybe moments,’ when it comes to descriptive romantic situations. Always highly sensual, but never crossing the line of descent sensibility-, well that’s the way I see it. The same applies to language. There are some dirty words that I just won’t say; still a latent fear that momma’s listening (I’m not sure that she wouldn’t understand the ‘blank-blank-blanks’ and other fillers-, so who am I fooling)!"
