Dr. Moira Rynn is Deputy Director of Research in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University (CU)/ New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI). She is the Medical Director of The Columbia University Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders (CUCARD) and Director of the Children’s Day Unit and the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Evaluation Service at NYSPI and CU
Can a medication typically used to treat acne help improve symptoms in children and adolescents with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) without the troubling side-effects of other medications for OCD? Researchers at Columbia Psychiatry and the New York State Psychiatric Institute are investigating whether minocycline, which in preliminary studies has been shown to help ease OCD symptoms, will provide relief to patients who have tried SSRI medications but continue to experience OCD symptoms.
In children, the symptoms of OCD manifest themselves similarly as in adults, said lead study researcher Moira Rynn, MD: “The most common symptoms that we observe involve a fear of germs or dirt or contamination. Patients often, also, tell us about their fears about harming themselves or others, which can lead to checking behavior and reassurance-seeking behavior
