    Anne Newkirk Niven

    in Education

Tonight Lady T welcomes Anne Newkirk Niven, publisher of Witches & Pagans, Sage Woman & Crone Magazines.
Like most Pagans, Anne believes that there really never was a time when she *wasn’t* Pagan; it’s just that she didn’t have a name for it. As a child she had a Mystical Heart, connected to the Earth and eventually, as a young adult, discovered the Goddess through reading two books: The Mists of Avalon (which was a gateway for many in her generation) and Starhawk’s original version of The Spiral Dance.
While trying to make a living in 1988, Anne was living in Point Arena, California, a tiny coastal community in the middle of nowhere; having given up pursuing a career in the Christian ministry (for both personal and thealogical reasons) she and her husband were operating a small print shop when she saw a copy of SageWoman and called the publisher, Lunaea Weatherstone, and asked to have the job of printing the magazine. Lunea's printer at the time had done a bad job for her sometimes printing pages upside down and backwards, so Anne & her husband got the job. After a long series of events, SageWoman came to be in Anne's hands, she ended up as Publisher, and has been doing this work ever since!

Shocking Story: Learn how an African man was used as a human zoo spectacle

    in Education

Call in to learn how Black Lives have been "caged" for entertainment since the turn of the century.  Bars by any name...are a prison...and a cage. Join host Dr. Sonia Banks, Chair, Manhattan Chapter, NCBW for our Leadersatplay Education Series. Meet an award-winning journalist, Pamela Newkirk, as she reveals a little-known and shameful episode in American history, when an African man was used as a human zoo exhibit—a shocking story of racial prejudice, science, and tragedy in the early years of the twentieth century in the tradition of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Devil in the White City, and Medical Apartheid.  In 1904, Ota Benga, a young Congolese “pygmy”—a person of petite stature—arrived from central Africa and was featured in an anthropology exhibit at the St. Louis World’s Fair. Two years later, the New York Zoological Gardens displayed him in its Monkey House, caging the slight 103-pound, 4-foot 11-inch tall man with an orangutan.

    Project Empowerment - Marc Bekoff

    in Self Help

Project Empowerment is honored to have on author and Professor Marc Bekoff.  He is professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder.  He has worked alongside leading writers and activists including Jane Goodall, Peter Singer, and PETA cofounder Ingrid Newkirk.

We’ll be discussing his new book Rewilding Our Hearts: Building Pathways of Compassion and Coexistence.

In wildlife conservation work, rewilding refers to habitat restoration and the creation of corridors between preserved lands to allow declining populations to rebound.  Marc Bekoff, one of the world’s most engaging animal experts and activists, here applies rewilding to human attitudes.  He argues that unless we rewild ourselves, becoming profoundly reconnected to nature and fundamentally shifting our consciousness, our conversation efforts will have but limited impact.

Please join us as we’ll be discussing this a so much more.  You can learn more about his work at www.literati.net/authors/marc-bekoff
