Guest: Sam Itauma, Executive Director, Child's Rights & Rehabilitation Network

    in Education

Sam Ikpe Itauma is the President and Founder, the Child’s Right and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN), and the CEO of Itauma Foundation (IFOUND).

CRARN is a charity group with headquarters in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria and a registered charity in the United States of America. Itauma initiated anti-witch hunt and killings campaign in African in 2000 when he rose to put a stop to the widespread killings of suspected witches, including adults and children in his home state by petitioning the commissioner of police and mobilizing stake-holders. The killings were a re-enactment of the “Inquisition” and the “Salem witch trials.” The killings were organized by different groups of irate and unemployed youths who formed themselves into different cult groups carrying out what they called “witch cleansing” with the backing of some influential politicians and religious leaders. No fewer than 600 people were killed within a space of two months, while thousands fled their homes.

    Celebrate Dan's Victory Ride

Support TBI Rehabilitation Research at Kessler Foundation

After his injury, Dan relearned the basics that most of us take for granted—walking, talking, and reading at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. He worked hard to regain his ability to think, learn, and remember. His therapists at Kessler Institute used intensive therapies, many developed by the scientists at Kessler Foundation.

With the support of our donors, we at Kessler Foundation make a direct and profound impact on the lives of people like Dan—people disabled by diseases and injuries of the brain and spinal cord. Our breakthrough research improves cognition, mobility, and long-term outcomes. Our funding of disability employment initiatives provide access to job opportunities, education, transportation and job training.

Dan's story is just one example of how your support can improve the lives of people with disabilities. Celebrate Dan's victory ride by making a gift today—a gift that will help others gain independence. Every dollar of your donation directly supports our misson to change the lives of people with disabilities.

    Heart Health and Cardiac Rehabilitation

    in Health

February 11, 2015: February is American Heart Month. Each year in the U.S., 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease, making it the leading cause of death for American men and women.

Also, approximately 720,000 Americans will have a heart attack each year – an alarming number that sadly isn’t surprising when one considers that almost half of Americans have at least one of the three key risk factors for heart disease: smoking, high blood pressure, or high LDL cholesterol.

In this episode a physical therapist outlines the signs of a heart attack, the risk behaviors for heart disease, and the healthy behaviors necessary to avoid heart disease. She also explains the cardiac rehabilitation process that awaits patients who are treated for a heart attack.

    Addictions....Revisited!!

    in Health

This week we will re-visit one of our most listened to shows...ADDICTIONS!!

Do you have addictions to alcohol, drugs, eating, gambling, shopping, sex/love, co-dependency, etc.?

Been to 12 step programs, counseling, took various meds but still relapsing?  There may be an answer!

On May 5, 2015at 8 pm (Eastern) Dr. Jess Armine will discuss addiction and relapse and the common neuro-physiological basis for addictive behavior as well as the genetic polymorphisms that lead to relapse. He will discuss how consistent cravings, "JONESING", or "white knuckling" are what lead up to relapse. Until now, The Build Up To Relapse has been treated predominantly with psychosocial modalities. The physiological causations are downplayed or remain un-attended. Based on the research of Kenneth Blum, PhD & Bill Downs PhD, these physiological and genetic imbalances are key causes of the cravings that build to relapse. Pioneers like, Dr Ben Lynch, Shawn Bean, h and Dr. Jess Armine have furthered the genetic/epigenetic portion of this research

This week Dr. Armine discusses the physiology of all types of addictions, the genetic contributions, and the new non-drug methods of addiction treatment NAAAT (NeuroAdaptive Amino Acid Therapy) and how combined psychological and physiological treatment gives the best prognosis for long term recovery.

READ THIS PLEASE!!!: Guys, I am a great supporter of the 12 Step Programs and other forms of conseling. NAAAT is to treat the physiological "part" of addictions and is best utilized IN ADDITION TO, NOT INSTEAD OF the 12 Step Programs, etc.

Join Us and Learn! There will be a .pdf and time for Q&A. See you then!!

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1083

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Olivia Martinez from Pico Rivera, CA, child abuse survivor and Employment Coordinator at the California Department of Rehabilitation who says she always aims at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Immigrating from Mexico in the 60's her family lived in the largely Latino East LA area. Her father was a blue collar worker who suffered from alcoholism. "I always felt alone," she wrote. But her mother spend the majority of her time dealing with her father's alcoholism. Olivia was repeatedly sexually abused by a cousin, eight years older than her. The first incident of this was when she was about three, but the last time was in adulthood. "I grew up eating my anxiety away and reached 375 pounds in adulthood. I was fat and felt like a monster." Eventually she began working on herself. "I had gastric bypass and lost all my excess weight. I began kick boxing I learned how to physically to not let anyone hurt me gain. The recovery period has been long and imperfect." Olivia began therapy for the first time when unsuccessfully trying to prevent a break up with her boyfriend, but eventually found more appropriate help at the East Los Angeles Woman Center where they assist woman who have been sexually and/or physically abused. "I have developed a more keen relationship with myself," she says, "and continue to work on me and my developmental stages and inner conflict I go through every day. I now am ready to let the world know my story and take what happened to me and embrace all the good things of who I am. I am preparing to finally forgive men in general for what one man did to me, and I want to one day forgive him for changing the course of my life and introducing a struggle that will never go away."
