Pro athletes remain in denial to the reality of their own injuries and the long term effects towards their overall health.
Leigh Steinberg, one of the most influential persons in pro sports, has become increasingly vocal regarding the injury of players today. During his 30-year career, Steinberg has represented over 150 athletes in football, baseball, basketball, boxing and Olympic sports.
It’s no surprise that athletes are hurting themselves in a professional sport system that appears to turn a blind eye for the sake of big money.
Teams are reluctant to keep their star players out of play for a length of time as this may hamper a playoff run, standings in the league or financial gain.
Some people have forecasted the eventual death of football if the lawsuits, concussions and life altering injuries do not cease. The game itself is not likely to change but in order to save the athletes it has been suggested, by many league officials, that Neurologists have a place on the sidelines of every game for players of all ages.
Leigh Steinberg joins us LIVE at BEYONDtheCheers on blogtalkradio on Wednesday, October 8th at 7PM EST. Friday at NOON is our repeat broadcast on AMFM247 plus listen anytime at iHeart Radio.com.

Hey drinkfive listeners!
Week 5 is over after a hard-fought but predictable loss by the Washington Redskins to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night. Though not as many as during the fantasy apocalypse earlier this season, there were quite a few injuries to key players in Week 5. We'll discuss the latest news on these players and what you can expect in the next few weeks from them (and their replacements, where applicable). Surprises and disappointments from the previous week, and a walk through the waiver wire leading up to Week 6 will also be discussion topics before we dive into a few key matchups for next week and debate the best fantasy starts in those games.
Thanks for joining us,
Dave and Jason
The Arizona Cardinals got the ship right, at least for a week, when they got a 17-14 come-from-behind win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. They got a key contribution from running back Kerwynn Williams and big plays from Alex Okafor, Jaron Brown and Deone Bucannon, with an assist on a replay.
On the show, Jess and Seth talk about the good and the bad from the game, discuss the play of Jonathan Cooper, who got his first NFL start and also debate whether Williams is the answer to the running game the rest of the way. They look at the road ahead and the possibilities of the postseason after getting to 10 wins. They also talk about the upcoming game on Thursday against the Rams.
Mark Russell is a 25 year Navy veteran and Chair, PsyD Program, School of Applied Psychology, Counseling and Family Therapy at Antioch University in Seattle. He's also the founder of the Institute of War Stress Injuries, Recovery, and Social Justice
The Institute of War Stress Injuries, Recovery, and Social Justice was established on June 1, 2012, at Antioch University Seattle, as the only known domestic or international academic entity dedicated to the principle of social justice with the overarching goal of ending cyclic failures in meeting the mental health needs of the warrior class. After every war since the turn of the 20th century, well-documented “psychiatric lessons of war” have been repeatedly ignored, resulting in costly military mental health crises. To this date, however, there has never been a full-investigation into the reasons for neglecting these hard won lessons in order to end the cycle of preventable harm and loss.
Welcome to another edition of INtheZONE! Week 15 saw the Dallas Cowboys take out their division rival Philadelphia Eagles with a dominant performance from Dez Bryant. On the contrary, the Green Bay Packers were dismantled by the Buffalo Bills and now find themselves in a tie with the Detroit Lions for the NFC North. Operation: Next Chapter is “working with Soldier’s Angeles Project: Valour-IT to provided 100 voice-controlled, adaptive lap-top computers for military personnel who have lost the use of their hands. Vietnam Veteran and author Cym Lowell will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of his latest novel, Jasper’s War, to purchase these individually adapted computers which cost $500 a piece. The laptops allow warriors who are healing from amputations, paralysis, eye injuries, burns and brain trauma to stay in touch with their family and their units during their recovery period.”
Cym Lowell "was born in Montana to academics and spent his youth traveling the world. To put it politely, he was an undistinguished student, rewarded with assignment to the U.S. Navy at 18. After two years in Vietnam, college and law school were a challenge. Being a veteran in the political turbulence of the late 1960s and early 1970s taught humility. Raising three children in the Midwest and Texas brought love and responsibility. An international tax practice in the financial crises of the past 40 years provided insight into motivations of actors on the global stage. Friends, clients, adversaries, and colleagues, like victory and defeat, added color and context. The result is a writer with a treasure trove of experience to frame compelling characters enmeshed in heart-thumping challenges." Cym Lowell is the author of The Gift, Riddle of Berlin and Jaspar's War.
