As we celebrate this year's G.I. Film Festival we thought we'd share some highlights from previous years. As with every day, World Footprints is proud to pay tribute to our nation’s heroes--our men and women in uniform, and the Hollywood patriots who support them. From the red carpet of the 2011 G.I. Film Festival in Washington DC, we will share our conversations with three award-winning actors: Gary Sinise, William Devane and Lou Diamond Phillips. We also met award-winning filmmaker Rodney Ray and budding filmmaker Chris Loverro. The GI Film Festival is the first film festival in the nation to exclusively celebrate the successes and sacrifices of the service member through the medium of film. Then we’ll chat with actor Sean Kanan who is best known for his role as Deacon Sharpe on The Young and the Restless. Sean joins us to talk about his journey from the mid-west to Hollywood and his travels with the USO.

LaKeisha Smith is an activist for human rights and for breast cancer awareness. She is the proud parent of four children and a new grandbaby. Its being a mother that has forced LaKeisha to step forward on educating more vigorously on health and genetics such as the BRCA1 gene she carries. Her stock does not fall from a tree unripe as Keishas' mother Michelle Smith has been a leader in the community within the realm of gentle teaching with JARC Inc. for all of Lakeishas' life. LaKeisha wears many hats but takes none as seriously or works with as much passion as she does at being the BEST parent she can offer to her children.
LaKeisha made a decision years ago to work at making her community and issues she stumbled over not as difficult for others. She has worked with teen pregnancy groups such as Lula Belle Stewart Services, and taught sexual responsibility at St. Johns Church on Oakland Ave in Detroit with Pastor Bertha Carter. LaKeisha also saw a need for individuals who re enter society from prison to have work so she aided in the discipline of employment with MPRI - Creating Safer Neighborhoods and Better Citizens via Insight Teleservices. "All these things are needed in rebuilding and healing the family structure within the community, but you must teach others how to heal themselves and how to build a positive self esteem first" says Keisha.

Where the roots don't grow. I chose that name as a lot of us who grew up in the system never felt like we had any roots or felt like we were ever part of a family that truly cared about us. Some of us were treated worse than animals and told daily we could be taken back where we were found, at times this was actually done to some of us. Its why kids have multiple placements because they are not adjusting to the new home and constantly moving them just makes it worse as it teaches them instability. Remember we were just kids and had no way to defend ourselves in our best interests. We were ripped from our homes over issues beyond our control and placed into new homes with strangers we didn't know or understand what we did to deserve this. Our family bonds were severed and we were lost, confused, and scared. But remember this was all done in our best interest by the system. We were traumatized but it was done in our best interest! We have nightmares, PTSD, can look forward to mental health issues later in life, some drugged to make them more compliant. This is just one part of this story as there are many other parts to tell. This is just the beginning of my story. Eventually I hope to get more former kids to come forward with their fight with the system. How they were treated and felt about the care they received.
