David Gogo, Webb Wilder & CKNM from Wendy DeWitt with Kirk Harwood

    in Music

SHOW # 298 - Live, Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With "Musicians You Should Know"

David Gogo is a Canadian blues guitarist, singer-songwriter and bandleader. Between 1994 and 2014, he released 12 solo albums. His latest release is entitled Vicksburg Call and we will explore David’s journey.

Sam Butler was not able to make his scheduled appearance.

Webb Wilder can sing you a song, or play a detective in a movie called Private Eye. And he does them both with a wiry grin.  Wilder has released Mississippi Möderne (he pronounces it Mo-Durn), his 10th album.  This is going to be a fun one me thinks…

Couch Kid New Music brings good friends Wendy DeWitt and Kirk Harwood back to The Couch with their most excellent new album, Getaway.  The duo, who we last saw on the IBC Final stage, have brought in some friends to help out, but as always this is about the dynamics between Wendy and Kirk and how it can fill a room.  We’ll caht about their lives and music and more.

Millions of Americans started their Thanksgiving getaway Wednesday by taking to the roads and airport security lines, undaunted by terrorism fears as officials continue to stress there are no “credible” threats in the wake of the Paris terror attacks earlier this month.

President Obama said at the White House there is no "specific and credible" intelligence indicating a plot against the U.S., while assuring anxious Americans, "While the threat of terrorism is a troubling reality of our age, we are both equipped to prevent attacks and we are resilient in the face of those who would try to do us harm."

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson echoed Obama's statement that there are no specific, credible treats to the homeland ahead of the 2015 holiday season.

Water Island, the Back Door of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands

    in Culture

Water Island is the smallest of the main US Virgin Islands, and that’s what gives it its charm. Rather than shops and restaurants, it’s the thatched cabanas and lazy vibe of idyllic beaches like Honeymoon Beach that are its main draw. Away from the beach, you can tour the underground tunnels and watchtowers of Fort Segarra, built during WWII. Getting around the island is best by bicycle or golfcart.

Around 160 people are fortunate enough to live on Water Island, but the volcanic island remains undeveloped.Facilities are limited to a few food outlets, dive shops and charters, a beach bar, fishing operator, & ferry dock. The US Virgin Island’s 4th island, Water Island only joined the group relatively recently, in 1996, and so far it’s kept its low-key atmosphere & local character. A 10-minute ferry ride from Charlotte Amalie, it lies southwest of the capital in the harbor, adjacent to Hassel Island.

Virgin Islands Campground is an eco-sensitive resort with self-contained cottages set on pristine, 500-acre Water Island, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Known for its natural charm, Water Island is a secluded getaway that should be at the top of your Caribbean vacation list. Spend a quiet day looking out over the ocean from your cottage’s private terrace.

A leisure 5-minute walk to idyllic Honeymoon Beach will have you snorkeling & sunbathing. In need of even more adventure? Visit rugged and secluded Limestone Bay, also just a quick trek down from your cabin.

View "Tour of Water Island" on YouTube featuring Africah Harrigan and Alex Randall.

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Cecil Ramirez!

    in Music

You already know that we cover the gamut of ALL That is Jazz on this show.  We have had the most traditional of the straight-ahead crowd.  We have had acts that are SO contemporary that they AIN'T Jazz ;)  Cecil Ramirez is that most awesome of artists - trained at The Music Conservatory, University of the Pacific (at age 16!), worked hard on the road with his college band, Pacific Crossing, and formulated his music through a cross-section of inspirations - helped along by his rigorous schedule in recording studios in Northern California.

Who Cecil IS: a seasoned artist who is completely comfortable playing that Mason & Hamlin piano in a living room - or outdoors to several thousand fans.  Something that needs to get said about our guest - while yours truly is typing this on Veterans Day: he's a military brat.  And that fact tells you what is necessary about his music.  Having lived in many places, one cannot help but be inspired by the many cultures and local flavor that surrounds you.  Cecil has brought this to his music, too.

What a pleasure to have this consummate keyboardist, composer and arranger on the show!  You ask Brian Culbertson about Cecil.  Brian has had this amazing artist as a key figure at Mr. C's "Napa Valley Jazz Getaway" for a few years now. Whew, is Cecil's life kicking!  And with "Party in the Back" (his second release), it's only UP from here.  The personnel on the album - besides his friend and frequent music collaborator, Brian: Darren Rahn, Michael Lington, Phil Denny and Adam Hawley!  So you KNOW that there are many who respect Cecil's vast talent.  Including this writer!

Besides having worked with the A-listers in Contemporary Jazz, Cecil has also spent time working on behalf on charities. Including cancer prevention and autism awareness. Please join us during our visit on 11/12!
