    October 8: The Wild Card

    in Sports

This episode of the Howitzer and Buzz-saw Show is a wild card, to say the least. Mike "the Buzz-saw" Asti and George "the Howitzer" Gerbo take you on a wild podcast ride.

Major League Baseball's Wild Card Round has continued to spark heated debates. Does baseball need to readress the playoff format? Is it an issue when 98 and 97 win teams are playing each other in one game while teams with fewer wins are sitting at home already in the next round? What possible "fixes" are even realistic? Mike, in typical heel fashion, explains why making the Wild Card Game into a best of three series would actually put the division winners at a disadvantage. Why have the road teams had so much success?

Regardless of the Wild Card issue, the MLB postseason has moved to the division series. Can Jake Arrieta "pull a Bumgarner" and help break a century plus curse? Are the Cubs the new favorite to win the NL pennant? Will the Dodgers finally play to their potential, instead of constantly disappointing in October? Who is the favorite in the American League? Do the Astros and Rangers have a shot at disrupting the assumed AL colission course of an ALCS between Toronto and Kansas City?

We've already seen the coaching axe drop in the NFL. Miami has fired Joe Philbin. While this move was onvious and long overdue, where do the Dolphins go from here? Can Ndamukong Suh live up to his contract? Has Chip Kelly also put himself on the hotseat with the Eagles struggles? How does Chip Kelly's tenure in Philadelphia tie into a premiere college football program (cough, Texas)?

A new NHL season is here. Will the Patrick Kane drama and the loss of some key pieces point to the end of the Blackhawks dynasty? Phil Kessel is in Pittsburgh. Mike Babcock is in Toronto. It's only day two of another asinine season.

The HBS, conquering sports radio, one day, at a time....

    Inside MLB

    in Baseball

he final week of the 2015 MLB season is upon us, and there is still a lot to be decided.

The National League playoff picture is fairly clear, with the Los Angeles Dodgers close to clinching the final spot and the Pittsburgh Pirates pulling ahead of the Chicago Cubs for the right to host the Wild Card Game. The Dodgers will meet the New York Mets, while the St. Louis Cardinals will await the wild-card winner.

Over in the American League, things aren't nearly as clear.

The Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals have both clinched, but with identical records, they are still battling for the best record and No. 1 seed.

The Texas Rangers have taken control of the AL West standings and the New York Yankees are firmly entrenched in the No. 1 wild-card spot, but the Houston Astros, Los Angeles Angels and Minnesota Twins are still battling it out for the last postseason slot.

All of that should make for an exciting final week, but for now, let's take an updated look at how all 30 teams stack up around the league.

When putting together this list, we considered the following factors:

    Last week's record

    Quality of opponent

    Key injuries/trades

Recent performance beyond the last week

The goal, as always, is to be as objective as possible. But a certain amount of subjectivity will always come into play with something like this.

Just remember: This is a fluid process. Teams will rise and fall on a weekly basis relative to where they ranked previously. If you keep winning, you keep climbing—it's as simple as that.

    Inside MLB

    in Baseball

After stopping off at the hot corner, the B/R MLB 300 now moves to the outfield for a look at the top center fielders in the league.

Like the four infield positions, our list of center fielders consists of 25 out of the overall 300 players. As for how this list came to be, we subjected each player to a scoring system that adds up to a total of 100 possible points.

First, there are 25 points for hitting. Our focus is on how well each player is equipped to hit for average and get on base. This means looking not only at how he hits the ball but also at how consistently he makes contact and whether he has the discipline to draw walks.

Then, there are 25 points for power. We concentrated on how well each player collects extra-base hits, which means looking at how often he puts the ball in the air—ground balls don't tend to go for extra-base hits, after all—how hard he hits it and how much of the field he can use for power.

Next, there are 20 points for baserunning. It's more of a priority for center fielders than it is for most, so we'll look at whether players can steal bases as well as whether they're capable of running the bases aggressively.
