Today we will be joined by Joan Maloof who wrote the amazing "Teaching the Trees: Lessons from the Forest". This is a wonderful, detailed description of the entire systems of the forest starting with the tree, how is just a stand of trees different from a forest and why is it important. I loved this book! She can explain why every part of the system matters. Joan studied Plant Science at the University of Delaware, Environmental Science at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Ecology at the University of Maryland College Park. She has published research articles about pollination biology in the journals Ecology and The American Journal of Botany (among others). Since 2002 she has expanded her ecological studies into the forest. Her book "Teaching the Trees: Lessons from the Forest" (University of Georgia Press, 2005) won an Honorable Mention from the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment. Her second book, "Among the Ancients: Adventures in the Eastern Old-Growth Forests," was published in April 2011 by Ruka Press.
Joan is currently developing a network of forests across the US which will remain forever unlogged and open to the public, called the Old-Growth Forest Network. Please visit the webpage: www.oldgrowthforest.net for more information. Please join us! If you have any questions or comments for me contact me at email@example.com. I would love to hear from you! Be sure and mark it Mindful Shift - peace out, Andrea
Mindful Mondays with Esther Turner of Rhythms of Life. Today's guests: Garth Fisher and Amber Vaughn Glass discuss T'ai-Chi and the art of movement.
Join Dr. Angela Lauria of The Author Incubator as she interviews Family Therapist and author Daniel Rechtschaffen on the publishing of his book, The Way of Mindful Education: Cultivating Well-Being in Teachers and Students.
Author Daniel said he started writing The Way of Mindful Education because it's the kind of work that he does, day in and day out. He would come home from working in a classroom and just had to write down an anecdote from the day. He was also leading trainings so he had probably ten times more material than he was able to fit into the book. "Once I chose to write, it felt like I was skiing downhill," he said. "I had plenty of frustrating moments, but for some reason, I had all the motivation in the world."

What role does the average person play in the grand scheme of things and how do our shopping habits contribute to either a just or injust economic and social order? We are actually more powerful than we think, and our everyday shopping patterns contribute greatly to the state of the world around us. In this episode I will discuss what I see as being the practice of Mindful Consumerism, and how we can make a conscious effort to change the world around us for the better. http://www.hermetictemple.com

Welcome to "Happiness Index!" This Thursday, we continue our conversation on Mindful Practices: Journey to Joy. The holidays are here and anxiety is building. There are the haves and the have-nots and it appears that the gap between the rich and the poor are greater now than ever. The stress to bring joy to your family by buying more things is great! How does one apply mindful practices to alleviate the stress that come during these "Holy Days"? How can we truly experience the Spirit of the Holidays? Mindful Practices can offer a way. Through Mindful Practices we can celebrate the Holidays in the spirit of giving and sharing without the stress of shopping. The whole world is in the spirit of celebrating. But, have we forgotten what the season represent? It is a time of reconnecting to our values, remembering and recalling the love we feel for each other. It is a time for community building and family gatherings. It is a time to forget about what others have and our struggle with fear and competition. This is a time to let go of false happiness. Today we will explore Mindful Practices and journey to joy together. Thank you for listening to "Happiness Index" on BlogTalkRadio.com.
