September 11, 2001 signaled a day of everlasting change for most of America. When we had our brain injuries, that process of ongoing grief and change, happened for us too. In both cases, many suffer not only from their injuries, but PTSD as well. Please call in tonight on this Eve of 9-11, when many of us revisit our grief from the country's tragedy, to those of our own. Collective mourning lends itself to support, and frees us from the isolation, we so often seek. It was 14 years ago that 9-11 happened. For me, 19 years since my brain injury. Too often we are told by others, or believe ourselves, that we should be done feeling the sting of our mourning this far down the road. Reality shows us, that recovery is process, with many triggers on the road, reminding us of the day(s) that changed us forever.
This show is a gathering place for anyone seeking recovery from the challenges of life on life's terms. I introduce topics, and survivor's share their experience, strength and hope. We discuss useful tools that have helped us lighten the load, of our journey through recovery.
More will be revealed! Tune in, stop in and call in. This is a "we" recovery program, because it is in the "we," that we find the new "me."
We focus on the four A's of Recovery: Awareness, Acceptance, Action and Adaptation. This is a place for survivor's striving to become thrivers.
Some nights we will have a featured guest, others we will introduce a topic of recovery, encouraging callers to join us in the discussion. The second part of the show is Open Mic and some great Indy Music, sure to inspire!

Let's talk about art!
Whether you're an artist or not, life with a brain injury takes a ton of creativity. I left my career as a rehabilitation clinician and became an artist after a TBI in 2010. The arts saved me by giving me a community and a way to explain my situation in a way other people could get it.
Making art can be adapted to any and all disabilities, and there are as many types of art or ways of expression as there are people. How do you use art? Personal expression, therapy, rehabilitation, political statement, or community building?
Whether you do drawing, photography, music, decorating, writing, sculpting, painting, sewing, movies, graffiti or any type of art, let's chat! You can introduce listeners to your art form and share with us the ways you adapt your art to work for a person living with a brain injury.

Almost 70 percent of black children are born to single mothers. Those mothers are far more likely than married mothers to be poor, even after a post-welfare-reform decline in child poverty. They are also more likely to pass that poverty on to their children. Sophisticates often try to dodge the implications of this bleak reality by shrugging that single motherhood is an inescapable fact of modern life, affecting everyone from the bobo Murphy Browns to the ghetto “baby mamas.” Not so; it is a largely low-income—and disproportionately black—phenomenon. The vast majority of higher-income women wait to have their children until they are married. The truth is that we are now a two-family nation, separate and unequal—one thriving and intact, and the other struggling, broken, and far too often African-American. Children are at high risk for brain injuries. The fall off changing tables, they are dropped by parents and other loved ones they are unsteady on their feet and therefore tend to fall down and hurt their fragile developing brains. Because children are growing rapidly they make what is thought to be a fast recovery. However, while tissue and bones might heal quickly the altered brain may take a different track. The greatest difficulties become apparent when they reach adolescence and their hormones kick in and the worse, out of control behaviors begins. Our guest tonight suffered such an injury when he was 11 years old. Back then brain injury was very poorly understood and he and his family were cut adrift to learn as you go the mysteries of brain injury. Well, this kid and his family were put through the mill and he has just recently learned what went wrong and why. Join us tonight for a discussion of their experiences of brain injury and what the family and what the future has in store.
