In Memory of Howard Phillips
Back a few weeks ago I was saddened to learn of the passing of Howard Phillips. Phillips was a man of principle who was champion for of the Constitution against the rising tides of secularism and liberalism. One of the original founders of the Moral Majority, he was a vocal advocate of Christian Reconstructionism and a follower of R.J. Rushdoony. His faith in Christ was strong, articulate and contagious.
In 1992 Howard Phillips founded what would later become the Constitution Party. After having working relationships with Presidents Nixon and Reagan, Phillips was convinced the Republican Party would not support and defend the Constitution our forefathers handed down to us. Instead of merely going along to get along in order to secure more power, he left the party in order to fight for principle.
Howard Phillips was also the chairman of the Conservative Caucus and host of the Conservative Roundtable weekly television program.
When I ran for Congress in 2007, Howard drove all the way up from Virginia (on his own dime) to help and campaign for me. He knew I had little chance of winning, but wished to encourage me and instill within me some core values about what is really important. My time with Howard Phillips will be a time I will always cherish.

Singer, songwriter, independent recording artist and touring musician. These are just a few things that describe Ray Lawrence Jr. Music has been a major part of Ray's life and music is the one thing thing that has helped him to survive. Ray has many experiences that give him the ideas for the songs he writes and he thinks about those things he went through as he performs his songs. Even the cover songs he does of other artists are songs that have meaning for him. A song must mean something to sing it right so feeling can be put into it and this is what you will hear and feel when Ray Lawrence Jr. performs a song. The idea is to help you heal through the music and for you to have a song to help you feel better.
Ray Lawrence Jr was born the oldest of 8 children in Chicago, IL. July 4, 1963 and was raised in Southern California, 3 hours south of Bakersfield. Ray began his music career at age 5, singing in school plays and later learned to play guitar and learnied other instruments. Having a father from Texas who was a lover of country music and bluegrass and being raised in what was back in the 60's, a hot bed for country music, Ray was in a good position to be influenced by artists like Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Buck Owens, Lester flat and Earl Scruggs, The Dillards, AKA The Darlings when they were on The Andy Griffith Show, Hee Haw, The Beverley Hillbillies, The Johnny Cash Show and The Glen Campbell show. Howard Levy is an undisputed master of harmonica. As the first person to play the diatonic harmonica as a fully chromatic instrument, Howard has opened a world of new possibilities for the instrument. Known worldwide for his many talents, Howard is also a pianist, composer, recording artist, bandleader, teacher, and producer.
Howard discovered an incredible breakthrough in 1970 at the age of 19: through the process of "overblowing", a technique which he meticulously developed, he could play the diatonic harmonica as a fully chromatic instrument. With this discovery, Howard was able to journey outside the realm of traditional harmonica music and explore other genres including Jazz, Classical, Latin and many other styles of World Music.
As a recording artist, Howard has played on hundreds of albums and several movie soundtracks. Aside from his prolific work as a solo performer, he is a founding member of the group Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, who in 2011 won a Grammy for the song "Life in Eleven", which Howard co-wrote. Howard also plays in the groups Trio Globo, Chévere de Chicago, Acoustic Express; and has recorded collaborations with Anthony Molinaro, Fox Fehling, Norman Savitt, Rabih Abou Khalil, and many others.
Howard was born in Brooklyn, New York and currently lives in Chicago, Illinois. He has been teaching harmonica lessons online with ArtistWorks since 2009.
