Alvarado and Rios own one victory apiece in a rivalry that would stand out in any era. Their previous encounters, in 2012 and 2013, were memorable slugfests that had fans on the edge of their seats from the opening bell. Now, they’ll meet in 12-round welterweight showdown before a partisan Alvarado crowd. Boasting a loyal following, Denver’s Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) has battled many top talents in the 140- and 147-pound weight classes, including Juan Manuel Marquez, Ruslan Provodnikov, Mauricio Herrera and Mike Dallas Jr. His crowd-pleasing style is an ideal match for Oxnard, Cal. native Brandon Rios (32-2-1, 22 KOs), who never backs down and has squared off recently with Manny Pacquiao and Diego Chaves. Previewing the bout, is the special “Road to Alvarado-Rios 3,” which replays Saturday, Jan. 24 (11:45 a.m. ET/PT) on HBO and is available on HBO ON DEMAND® and HBO GO® Following the first Rios-Alvarado fight, Yahoo! Sports wrote, “Each round was bitterly contested and the advantage would swing from one guy to the other like a pendulum,” adding that it was “one of the most sensational bouts in a long time. Opening the telecast, Mexico’s Gilberto Ramirez (30-0, 24 KOs) makes his HBO debut in a ten-round light heavyweight matchup with Russia’s Maxim Vlasov (30-1, 15 KOs). Ramirez, who is moving up in weight to take on Vlasov, relies on knockout power and ring savvy; appearing on HBO Latino in November, he stopped Fulgencio Zuniga in the eighth round. Vlasov has won his last 11 fights.
Tonight marked the 3rd fight in the Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios and Mike “Mile High” Alvarado trilogy. The first fight was fought on Rios’ territory of Carson, California, the second fight was on neutral ground at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. So, it only made sense to host the third and presumably last fight in Alvarado’s backyard of Broomfield, Colorado at the 1stBank Center.
The reports heading into this 3rd fight suggested that Alvarado was dealing with some serious distractions. Of course, everybody was aware of the gun possession charge, but there were other unconfirmed rumors that extended beyond the charges.
In the first round, Rios came out trying to establish an effective distance and found success up-close. He landed clean, hard shots that had Alvarado grasping at clinches and holding as much as possible with the hopes of resetting and reestablishing his game plan.

Well that sucked. Brandon Rios vs Mike Alvarado III was all but guaranteed to be a cracking bout, even if it didn't last long. The last part was true, because the fight was over after just three rounds, but it was all Rios, all day. There seem to be more questions about Alvarado in the wake of the bout than anything else, and rightfully so. This week on TQBR Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Queensberry Rules' Patrick Connor welcome back Eric Raskin, ESPN and Grantland contributor, and co-host of the Ring Theory podcast. With a predictable early year gap coming in the boxing schedule, it leaves us open to talk Raskin's article about James "Buster" Douglas vs. Mike Tyson in Playboy, recent structural issues in the sport, and more. Thanks for tuning in!

Already in 2015, it's been a little easier to stay optimistic about the future of boxing may bring. Since last week's show, there have been announcements about boxing's return to network television via Al Haymon, the US picked up a heavyweight belt-holder for the first time in years in Deontay Wilder, on an entertaining first big TV card of the year, and while the schedule isn't densely packed, there's enough going on to keep us occupied. This week on TQBR Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and Patrick Connor of The Queensberry Rules welcome Brin-Jonathan Butler back to the show to discuss recent happenings in the sport, the upcoming schedule and much more. Specifically previewed will be this weekend's HBO rubbermatch between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado. Thanks for tuning in!
