Our guest on Metalsmith Benchtalk on Thursday April 9th, 2015 at 3:00 pm PST is sculptor Kevin Caron.
We invite you to listen and participate in this live interview by logging onto the chatroom on Blogtalkradio.com or by sending a message to Whaley Studios via Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
Kevin Caron is a sculptor from Phoenix, Arizona. He has created more than 40 private and public commissioned works which are on display across the United States. His public art sculpture Hands On won 17th Annual Best of the West Arts & Culture Award for 2009. He works primarily in fabricated steel.
Caron was born on February 2, 1960. He moved to Arizona with his family in 1973. He served six years in the US Navy, where he worked in machine shops, and aircraft maintenance yards. He was honorably discharged in 1983.
He managed a car repair shop, and in between jobs, built his own vehicle. His career as a sculptor was inspired by his work on a privacy screen. When he had completed the screen, he visualized a fountain made from the same material. Caron became a full-time artist in 2006.
As he launched his art career, he also began a YouTube channel, adding a video each week. By August 2013, the channel had more than 300 videos, more than 15,000 subscribers and 5 million views. He lists M.C. Escher and Antoine Pevsner among his design inspirations.
This week Gregg Carter, of the Rural Economist, joins me to talk about small scale cottage industry. Special Guest: Willard Wigan is a sculptor from Birmingham, England, who makes microscopic art. Willard’s micro-sculptures are so minute that they are only visible through a microscope. Each piece commonly sits within the eye of a needle, or on a pin head.
Willard’s artwork has been described by many as “the eighth wonder of the world”. Such accolade resulted in him being honoured by HM. Queen Elizabeth II with an MBE for his services to art, which was presented by HRH. Prince Charles in July 2007.
Owners of Willard’s work now include: HRH. Prince Charles, Sir Elton John, Sir Philip Green, Lord Bath, Mike Tyson and Simon Cowell to name but a few. Willard’s latest piece, the Coronation Crown was requested by HRH Queen Elizabeth II in tribute to her celebration to her Diamond Jubilee. http://www.willard-wigan.com
Special Guest: Horologist Stephen Forsey partner in the Greubel Forsey watch making company. In 1999 Greubel and Forsey began working on a new generation of tourbillon specifically designed to improve the timekeeping of the mechanical watch. Four years later they unveiled "Greubel Forsey" and stunned horological aficionados with their innovative Double Tourbillon 30°, a timepiece clearly demonstrating their twin goals of innovation and excellence. http://www.greubelforsey.com
Art Piece 1 is collaboration between Robert Greubel, Stephen Forsey and Willard Wigan, and features one of Wigan’s micro-sculptures, observable through special optics.
We are pleased to have Jonathan Bartlett, author of "Micro Secession" as our guest. His book delinates simple ways to liberate yourself, your family, and your community from government idiocy. This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy discusses the phenomenon behind “winged cats” - cats with wing-like appendages. But the unusual animal investigation doesn’t stop there. Also discussed will be the Ayam Cemani chicken of Indonesia, a rare breed whose entire body is black. Not just feathers, but head, beak, eyes, legs and even the insides.
Oxitec, a British biotech company, plans to release an experimental mosquito population in the Florida Keys genetically engineered to combat dengue fever. Local residents are concerned for a number of reasons, such as the lack of testing done, and the sudden introduction of a non-native species into the local population.
Are mosquitoes just the tip of the iceberg? According to some accounts, genetically modified “micro humans” could be used in scientific testing within two years. Although the dangers of genetically engineered humans should be obvious, the benefits could outweigh the cost if there is the possibility of eradicating diseases and potentially find a cure for the greatest disease of all: aging and death.

Tonight we are joined by Brien Foerster to discuss his research into the ancient elongated skulls of Peru.
Brien Foerster was raised on the west coast of Canada, where he developed a fascination for the Native people, their art, and oral traditions. This led to his becoming a professional sculptor, after graduating with an honours BSc degree from the University Of Victoria. In 1995, he moved to Maui, Hawaii, and was hired as assistant project manager for the building of the 62 foot double hull sailing canoe (ancestor of the modern day catamaran) and the restoration of the famous Mo'olele sailing canoe. He started an online outrigger paddle business, which flourished internationally.
Peru became his next major area of interest. The study of the Inca culture led to his writing a book, A Brief History of the Incas, and he is now the assistant director of the Paracas History Museum in Paracas, south of Lima.

Yes it is our second robot-themed show in as many weeks. But there's no keeping up with them. We could do a robot-themed show every day and we still wouldn't be able to keep up. Where are the robots now?
They are in our kitchens.
They are in our workplaces.
They are running hotels (or will be soon)
The are on the battlefield (or will be soon)
They are on the scene in disaster sites where no human could survive.
They are swarming in the air.
And very soon -- they are headed for the great beyond?
Are you ready for a world that is ARATT (all robots, all the time?) Tune in and explore.
Our guest on Metalsmith Benchtalk on Thursday, April 16th, 2015 at 3:00 PST/ 6:00 EST is Michael Gayk, educator, digital designer and maker of things.
Please join us for this LIVE interview and participate by logging onto the chatroom at Blogtalkradio.com or by sending a message to Whaley Studios via Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.
Michael Gayk earned an MFA in Jewelry and Metals from the University of Washington and an BFA in Metals Design from the College for Creative Studies.
Plural Studios is a design collaboration between Courtney Starrett and Michael Gayk. Plural is interested in creating well-designed objects for the home or body, utilizing innovative digital technologies to create limited editions of our objects. We are inspired by architecture on a micro-level; observing transitions, connections, and details, as the sum of all parts, both man-made and natural. At Plural we strive for accessibility along with high design objects both for the home and the body.
“My current work investigates the relationship between body adornment and the digitized human body. Historically jewelry has always reflected the technologies of its time. A necklace fashioned from seashells dating 80 BCE years old was found at Taforalt in eastern Morocco. This discovery illustrates the sense of symbolic material value of that time and suggests a developed capacity for cultural modernity. The example of the seashell necklace comes from a genus of marine snail called Nassarius, which no longer inhabits the shores of Morocco today. With the use of advanced manufacturing methods such at bio-printing and DNA duplication it may be possible to cultivate the lost Nassarius, or any biological structure.”
