The term Internet of Things (IoT) is relatively new and one we are going to be hearing a lot more about. Consider this; currently there are more wireless devices than there are people. The plus side is, of course, all of the great things we can do with this connectivity. The bad side is, at what risk? Recently 104,000 IRS records were breached. Are patient healthcare accounts secure? These, and questions like them, will need answers as we continue the evolution to a 'connected society'.
On June 1st, join host Melissa Birnie as she speaks with Dan Lohrmann, Chief Security Officer & Chief Strategist at Security Mentor, Inc., and most recently, Chief Security Officer for the State of Michigan, to learn more about IoT and the security challenges we will face as IoT becomes more prevalent.
Our guest Dan Lohrmann holds a master’s degree in computer science from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Valparaiso University in Indiana, and has more than 28 years of experience in the computer industry. He is an internationally recognized cybersecurity leader, technologist and author. During his distinguished career, Dan has served global organizations in the public and private sectors in a variety of executive leadership capacities, including enterprise-wide Chief Security Officer (CSO), Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) roles in Michigan. Under Lohrmann’s leadership, Michigan was recognized as a global leader in cyberdefense for government - winning numerous professional awards for outstanding accomplishments.

Software – a set of instructions that make devices perform tasks. It sounds really simple. In reality, it’s likely not, unless of course, you wrote the program. On June 2nd, 2015, host Melissa Birnie will speak with Derek Sommer, President of Spud Software. Spud Software was started in a basement in Grand Blanc, Michigan in 1997 and would catch the attention of the likes of General Motors and MSX International and, after completing several successful large scale projects, would develop a reputation for delivering high quality solutions at competitive prices. Almost 20 years later, Spud Software has worked with more than 200 clients and has established itself as a leader in the industry specializing in programming, database and software development. Join Melissa and Derek as they discuss the challenges Derek encountered as an entrepreneur in the software industry (his wife Gretchen is an entrepreneur, too!), learn about the variety of services Spud Software offers (SaaS, Project Scoping, Software Prototyping, Staff Augmentation, Tier 2 Support, Mobile Apps, Web Services and Custom Programming), and the talent necessary to make it all work.
On Monday, June 22nd, the Mobile Technology Association of Michigan will launch the Women in Mobile Tech Advisory Council with a mission ‘to support women through access to educational forums, networking, mentoring, technical training, resources, scholarships, and more, with a primary focus on professional women currently working with, or interested in working with, these technologies in any industry.
With a lack of mobile/wireless tech-trained talent available, and universities unable to turn out trained graduates fast enough to meet the demands of Michigan-based firms and branches of national and international firms located here, identifying ways to engage more women in the space as a potential solution to this staffing shortage is an area of focus by a wide variety of regional employer groups, educational institutions, economic development organizations, and non-profits. The Women in Mobile Tech Advisory Council will be the resource to pull together the various stakeholders and resources focused on this issue to connect talent, interest and opportunity.
The launch of the Women in Mobile Tech Advisory Council will feature an incredible panel of women leaders in the mobile/wireless tech space from a cross-section of industries to address this topic, as well as discuss their own journey's to achieving success in this field. Join host Melissa Birnie and guest, Linda Daichendt, MTAM Exeutive Director, to learn more about the Women in Mobile Tech Advisory Council, what you can expect to learn at the launch event, and what this Council expects to do for women in Michigan to enable them to utilize these technologies for career/business growth.
