Today we launch Meningitis News Radio as we celebrate World Meningitis Day! Courtney Martin began her fight against meningitis in 2007 when she lost her son, Ryan Paul Martin to an undiagnosed strain of bacterial meningitis. Since, she has been instrumental in advocating and fundraising in honor of Ryan. Courney Martin discusses the loss of her son, her recent court case and her mission to help end meningitis.
Daisi Pollard Sepulveda-Low, host of Meningitis News, also talks about moving forward after surviving meningitis, advocacy, health and the future of Meningitis News.
On today’s show we have Janice Gaskin, a mother who’s son contracted streptococcus meningitis at 2 months of age.
Janice is also a founding Board Member of the Eradicate Meningitis Fund. She is here to talk about her families experience with Streptococcus Meningitis and living with the long term effects of streptococcus meningitis.

Doctors of the USA welcomes Daisi Pollard Sepulveda; Charity Ambassador, Business Entrepreneur, International Model and the reigning Mrs. Ethnic World International 2012. She will talk about Meningitis Awareness. Daisi has launched a career out of competition, representing Jamaica and the Caribbean in international pageants and branding herself an extreme queen through rigorous physical competitions such as marathons, agility, martial arts and precision sports such as blade throwing and billiards.
Aside from being a Beauty Queen, Daisi is currently the 2012-2013 elected President of Figuratively Speaking Toastmasters, a member club of Toastmasters International. She also sits on the Board of the Meningitis Foundation of America and the committee for the National Meningitis Association’s Give Kids A Shot Gala.
Join us for our 2nd episode of Meningitis News. Respected Hollywood Reporter, Liz Crokin is our guest. Daisi Pollard Sepulveda-Low, host of Meningitis News will interview Liz about her experience with meningitis, survivorship and her upcoming book based on her experience. As a journalist, Liz has covered celebrities all over the world for publications such as Us Weekly, Star magazine, the RedEye Edition of the Chicago Tribune and In Touch Weekly. Daisi Pollard Sepulveda-Low will also talks about the risk of contracting meningitis through enteroviruses such as herpes, the after effects and the long term side effects.
The National Meningitis Association (NMA) estimates that 800 to 1,200 people are infected with meningococcal disease each year in the US. Meningococcal disease can cause bacterial meningitis and sepsis, both serious and life-threatening conditions. Despite treatment, 10-15% of those infected die from this devastating disease; and without treatment, the mortality rate is 70-90%. Every 10 minutes, one person dies worldwide from meningococcal disease.
Lynn Bozof is the President of the National Meningitis Association (NMA). Lynn will speak about World Meningitis Day (April 24th) to help raise public awareness so more people are educated about the signs, symptoms and prevention methods of this potentially deadly disease.
Jamie Schanbaum is a 25 year old survivor of meningococcal septicemia. Jamie recently participated in a global awareness campaign with world-renowned photographer Anne Geddes called Protecting Our Tomorrows: Portraits of Meningococcal Disease. Her portrait will be featured in a free eBook available on World Meningitis Day (April 24) on iBooks
