Jay Rath is a writer and cartoonist who, besides serving as a longtime staff member at The Onion and as a contributor to MAD magazine, has written three books on unexplained phenomena in the upper Midwest. He regularly reviews books for The Fortean Times, which is perhaps the leading magazine dealing with unusual phenomena of all kinds.
Jay has worked in journalism, animation, independent film, and extensively in radio drama. Just this spring he wrote the pilot for a new public radio game show, produced by WQXR in Manhattan. From childhood, Jay has been fascinated by reports of Bigfoot, UFOs and the like, and it remains one of his passions. He's investigated those, as well as stories about lake monsters, leprechauns, the creature Native American's call "Windigo," and much more.

THE CYNZ are a full-throttle rock band formed around the songwriting talents of CYNDI DAWSON (vocals) and HENRY SEIZ (guitar/vocals). The band has been called "the closest thing to the 1970's CBGB's you will get from a band that formed in 2011." Their songs are hard-rocking tales of pain, heartbreak, survival, determination, redemption, and unbridled joy, at break-neck speed!!!
Cyndi Dawson is a visual on-stage tsunami. She leads the band through shamanic rock & roll rites of passage. Her raw, emotional stage presence along with the band’s edgy, powerful vibe is truly an unforgettable experience.
Their influences derive from the late '70s Lower East Side NYC chainsaw music of the Ramones and the tough, gritty vibe of The MC5, Alice Cooper and Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. THE CYNZ have opened for legendary acts such as the newly-reformed Blues Magoos, The Split Squad, Martha Davis & The Motels, Ivan Julian, Sonny Vincent, The Vibrators, Billy Rath’s Street Pirates, Warrior Soul, Walter Lure & The Waldos, and The Zero’s.
THE CYNZ have two previous albums to their credit. The first, entitled “THE ORIGINAL CYNZ” and the second “FIVE MORTAL CYNZ” are guitar-driven, in-your-face dance fests. Their second CD contains a rocking track co-written with Gary Heffern, lead vocalist of the legendary San Diego-based band, The Penetrators entitled “Blame It On The Kiss” which is also their new video release directed by Kyle Schickner. Their third and newest CD, Superfan, available through Bongo Boy Records, contains tracks from the first two albums and five new tracks previously unreleased on CD. THE CYNZ have recently completed a tour of Sweden, and have released several singles produced by Peppy Castro of The Blues Magoos .

MEAGHAN BLANCHARD, a vibrant red-headed singer-songwriter, grew up in the rolling hills of beautiful Prince Edward Island. Although a shy and quiet child, Meaghan gravitated towards music with a natural ability to write & hum her own tunes at a very young age. As she grew up, Meaghan’s natural vocal ability had her front and center of a number of community gatherings, children’s choirs and kitchen parties in her home town of Hunter River. Although Meaghan’s shyness followed her throughout her school years, she found comfort in logging away her hopes and dreams in small journals that she kept tucked into her desks. Tired of letting her shyness get in the way of her musical dreams, Meaghan turned to her grandmother Glenda - a Country singer who performed most weekends in the rural halls of PEI - for advice. Grammy Glenda’s words still have meaning to her to this day: “Look for the person in the audience who is looking like they’re having a bad day and sing to them; make em’ smile. It’ll take your fear away, and you never know what that could mean to somebody”. It was by watching her grandmother’s performances that Meaghan also came to know and love some of the greatest female country singers of all time: Tammy Wynette, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. They have all had a significant influence on her music even to this day. Meaghan recorded her first full length collection of songs with producer John Keane (R.E.M., Nancy Griffith, B52′s) in Athens, Georgia. The album She’s Gonna Fly was released in July 2013.
This week we will be joined by special guest Jesse Rath who plays Alak Tarr on Syfy's Defiance!

The Sullivans were a strong faithful Catholic family who were followers of Jesus Christ from the very beginning of their marriage. Perhaps they were the typical family living in middle America, Waterloo Iowa.
Thomas Sullivan worked as a freight conductor on the Illinois Central Railroad that gave the family support during the Great Depression, while his wife Alleta was the nest builder. She had five sons and one daughter raising them as strong Catholics.
Their sons George, Francis, Joseph, Madison, and Albert, grew up at a time when family life in America was centered on faith and patriotism. Their sister, Genevieve learned from her mother what a Christian woman was to be.
Being typical boys, they would be involved with everything, rebuilding a boat to have fun sailing, even if it did sink, running up a tower to watch their Father passing by on the train, they were close as brothers.
Philippians 3:17 states, “Join with others in being imitators of me, brothers, and observe those who thus conduct themselves according to the model you have in us.” St. Paul is giving us the call to follow holiness, first to follow the example of the Apostles, the first followers of the Lord. We are to imitate their example of proclaiming liberty setting the captives free.
Growing up, the boys worked at Waterloo’s Rath Packing Co living the American dream.
Al, the youngest son, was the only one of the brothers that married and has a young son.
On December 7, 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and with the news of a close friend’s death all five brothers enlisted in the Navy on January 3, 1942 getting the opportunity to serve together.

It's Smith week on Canadian Musician Radio as we welcome two accomplished yet stylistically contrasting artists to the show. What's more, we also have a candid conversation with music publicist and Canadian industry icon Richard Flohil, plus some goodies from East Coast Music Week 2014 and more.
The founder of Richard Flohil & Associates has been an instrumental component to the careers of a plethora of successful artists, from k.d. lang and Colin James to Serena Ryder and Justin Rutledge and well beyond. He's received numerous awards and honours from the likes of SOCAN, the CASBYs, and was just named the recipient of the 2014 President's Choice Award from Folk Music Ontario. Join us as we take a look back at Richard's decades in the business.
Then, we'll catch up with Dallas Smith who, after 10 years fronting Canadian rock outfit Default, has released a solo country EP called "Tippin Point." We'll talk about the transition from one genre to the other and get some insight into his creative process, among other things.
We're also very pleased to have Maritimer Meaghan Smith on the program. After a JUNO win for her major label debut, The Cricket's Orchestra, Smith took a few years off to prepare her next release, Have A Heart, set to drop April 22nd. The single of the same name is out now and doing very well at radio. We'll get the scoop from Meaghan on her sonic shift, upcoming affairs, and a whole lot more.
We'll also have some news and updates from ECMW, plus a handful of interviews for later in April, so keep an eye on the page!
