Praise for Please, Pretty Lights:
Dark, gritty, and intoxicating...exactly how I like it. Please, Pretty Lights, a poignant portrait of music, drugs and relationships, is harrowing at times and masterly written. It's easily one of my favorite books of the year. – Marni Mann, author of Memoirs Aren’t Fairytales

Brick is a 2005 American neo-noir thriller film written and directed by Rian Johnson, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
A hardboiled detective story that takes place in a Californian suburb. Most of the main characters are high school students. The film draws heavily in plot, characterization, and dialogue from hardboiled classics, especially from Dashiell Hammett. The title refers to a block of heroin, compressed roughly to the size and shape of a brick.
The film is widely regarded as a cult classic.
John Smart began working on feature film in the Art department while still in college at the University of New Mexico where he received a BFA in theater. After a number of years working on such films as The Big Easy, Heathers, and Barfly - he decided to teach in Los Angeles and at school for teens who’d gotten in trouble with drugs. He became known for bringing film industry professionals to the school as guest speakers and mentors. Establishing a relationship between the school and the local film and TV industry that lasted long after he was gone. When John returned to working on films he dove into legal clearances. He’s worked on a long list of projects including: The Good Lie, Don Jon, 2 Guns, Shopgirl, The Hot Flashes, Linsanity, Looper, Bullet To The Head and approximately 60 other films, TV shows and DVD games. He loves clearances because he can both assist in legally getting a production difficult items they may want or need for a project - but more importantly a Clearance administrator is one of the last firewalls a production has avoid legal action - and a copyright infringement claim can be lethal for a film. KDSL highlights people and organizations who are working locally, domestically, or globally on innovative ideas in education. On 11 March at 12noon KDSL will chat with Marni Barron. Marni Barron is an educator who has worked in the education field for 20 years and is also a doctoral candidate in educational leadership. She has used a deliberate system of strategies with students at risk of failure in Michigan, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
After nearly a decade of isolating and often alienating solution-seeking research, she developed a formula in which to integrate a deliberate system of brain-based scientific strategies with the current education reform effort’s national blueprint. This plan preserves the integrity of research-based educational practices and threads them into the existing structure of reform ideology. Soul Tree is symbolically rooted in the heart of the nation’s capital which provides on-going access to local, national and global partners interested in bridging the gaps within education reform
Ms. Barron has received numerous awards to include recognition as a highly effective educator in D.C. Public Schools, excellence in leadership from the YMCA of Greater Washington, D.C. and selected to represent the United States of American through a Congressional delegation at the World Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Ms. Barron has B.A. in Elementary Education from Howard University, a M.A. in Teaching from Marygrove College and will complete her Doctorial studies in Educational Leadership with an emphasis on Effective Schools at Grand Canyon University in 2015.
