Marla Gibbs, the actress who played Florence the maid on the TV sitcom "The Jeffersons." and starred on "227," has given a little back to the old neighborhood by opening Marla's Memory Lane (which is also known as Marla's Jazz Supper Club).
It's exactly what the name suggests, offering authentic old-time Jazz, Standards, and Big Band in a relaxed dining environment.
She opened the club in 1981 (although it's been around for over 60 years in one form or another.) Marla has managed to keep the place going despite financial difficulties, but since 1994, it has been open and closed sporatically. So you'll probably want to call ahead to be sure that something is scheduled. As of April 1999, though, Marla's offered a Jazz Champagne Brunch with live entertainment every Sunday ($17)
Over the years, the club has been a showcase for many up & coming African-American jazz artists. Some of the legends of jazz have played there over the last decade, including Big Joe Turner, Jimmy Witherspoon, Pee Wee Crayton and Albert Collings. In early May of 1995, the club hosted a two-day birthday bash for Marla (replete with live jazz), which was open to the public. It may become an annual tradition. (Her birthday is May 14, by the way...)
The place has a bar and showroom in the front room, and a dining room in the back with celebrity photos.
The only drawbacks are the club's unusual hours (it's open Sunday from 11 AM to 4 PM) and its location in South-Central Los Angeles. (Exercise reasonable caution.)

Tomás Doncker As a prime mover on New York’s downtown “No Wave” scene in the early 1980s, Tomás Doncker cut his teeth as a guitarist with such genre-busting groups as James Chance & The Contortions, Defunkt, J. Walter Negro & The Loose Jointz and many more. Eventually he went international, touring and recording in Japan with jazz pianist Masabumi Kikuchi, and producing studio and songwriting sessions with Boosty Collins, Yoko Ono, Reggae vocal group The Itals, and producer Prince Charles Alexander, to name just a few. No One Should Go To Jail For A Plant!
“California cops eat marijuana edibles, play darts, joke about kicking amputee’s ‘f---ing nub’ during Santa Ana pot shop raid” blared the headline in the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS. UPI, CBS, NBC and FOX News issued stories of pot brownie eating verbally abusive and castigating cops caught on video. The story broke June 12 when Orange County Voice and attorney Matt Pappas released a video tape of the raid by a camera the police overlooked when they stormed into the Sky High Dispensary and dismantled what they thought were all the video cameras.
The show’s first guest is Marla James, a volunteer at the dispensary who is a legally blind amputee, who was there when the cops burst in with masks on, guns drawn and ordered members and employees to the ground. The brouhaha that has ensued with nationwide attention over the abusive pot eating cops has triggered an internal investigation. Hear the story behind the story as Marla recounts what happened that fateful day.
Citizen Lobbyists for medical marijuana is the name of the game in Sacramento on June 15 as Americans for Safe Access brings hundreds of medical marijuana patients and advocates from all over the state of California to lobby their state legislators for safe, reliable and local access to their medicine. With 13 bills touching almost every aspect of medical marijuana, patients want to let their lawmakers know how these bills will affect their lives.
Every year the Marijuana Anti-Prohibition Project rents a 15 passenger van to bring patients to ASAs Citizen Lobby Day. For this show the second guest are six of these patients in a free-spirited discussion on why they are in Sacramento, what it’s like to be there and what they hope to accomplish.
Our Public Education is under relentless attack. In Wisconsin, Governor Scott Walker slashed the education budget in favor of privatization, standardized testing, and a basketball stadium. In New York, the Board of Regents appointed MaryEllen Elia as its Education Commissioner. Elia, who was ran out of Florida, has long ties to Common Core and Standardized Testing. The recent Opt-Out movement that was so large in New York essentially had its face slapped. Georgia and Wisconsin both are advocating for a workforce instead of education and a growing movement to certify teachers without requiring the formal education. The two major political parties are behaving essentially the same. We are joined again by Marla Kilfoyle of Badass Teachers, http://www.badassteacher.org/ to discuss the many issues destroying our education system. Marla offers the educator and activist perspective. BAT's mission "to give voice to every teacher who refuses to be blamed for the failure of our society to erase poverty and inequality through education and refuse to accept assessments, tests and evaluations created and imposed by corporate driven entities that have contempt for authentic teaching and learning." So grab a cup of coffee and join us. Longtime Activist, Journalist, Coffee Party USA Board of Director & Radio Host, Bobby Rodrigo's show "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee" on Coffee Party USA Radio airs Sunday Morning at 8:30AM. Advocating engagement Bobby points out the Constitution is the Rule of Law and why it should remain so. Money in Politics, the Political Party Machine, and partisan blind allegiance is on full display as he advocates against the erosion of Constitutional Protections in the name of corruption & tyranny. "If we focused on following the Constitution we would solve many of the ills of our society.”
Happy 2015!! May you prosper in the coming year!
