Catholic Founding Fathers - The Carroll Family
CHARLES CARROLL CARTER
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, Patrick Henry, Benjamin Franklin. Nearly every schoolchild recognizes them as the Founding Fathers. But there were a great many more Founding Fathers, even if their names are not so familiar as the above. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, Patrick Henry, Benjamin Franklin. Nearly every schoolchild recognizes them as the Founding Fathers signers of the Declaration of Independence, framers of the Constitution, heroes of the Revolutionary War.
There were a great many more Founding Fathers, however, even if their names are not so familiar as the above. Several of those lesser-known men who played key roles in the creation of the United States of America were Catholics. Chief among them were three members of the Carroll family of Maryland: Charles Carroll, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence; his cousin Daniel Carroll; and Daniel Carroll's brother John Carroll, who became America's first Catholic bishop.
Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737-1832) was the most illustrious and best-known of the Carrolls. He was the only signer whose property Carrollton was mentioned in the Declaration of Independence. Carrollton was the 10,000-acre estate in Frederick County, Maryland, that Charles Carroll's father had given him on his return to America from his education in Europe.
At the time he signed the Declaration, it was against the law for a Catholic to hold public office or to vote. Although Maryland was founded by and for Catholics in 1634, in 1649 and, later, in 1689 after the Glorious Revolution placed severe restrictions on Catholics in England, the laws were changed in Maryland.

We're not sure about you, but we've made the proper sacrifices to our heathen boxing gods to ensure the momentum built up over the last few weeks in boxing carries us through the summer. Such tactics may or may not work, but we can't find out if we don't try! Last week we saw Saul "Canelo" Alvarez win a shootout with James Kirkland on HBO, and the same network gave us a some fun showcases in Gennady Golovkin vs Willie Monroe Jr and Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez vs Edgar Sosa. Yes, showcases. Both of the "house" fighters were favored. But they made such ventures fun to watch, didn't they? This week on the show, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and Patrick Connor of The Fight City and more go over all of that in their own strange ways. Thanks for tuning in!

In the first edition of the 32 for 32 report by The Rocket Sports Breakdown, we'll be covering the San Francisco 49ers who were, by far, the biggest soap opera in all of the 2014 off-season. That drama carried over into the regular season which many of us had began to hear rumors of tension between the organization & former head coach Jim Harbaugh, who left to become head coach at his alma mater, Michigan University. In 2015, there have been many changes to this team. It started w/ a new head coaching hire in Jim Tomsula, which resulted in many folks scratching their heads & making more bar trips to drown their depressions. A handful of players have either retired, moved on to other teams in free agency, or simply been cut. However, some of their new editions have included linebacker Darnell Dockett, running back Reggie Bush, & wide receiver Torrey Smith, whose former team Baltimore Ravens defeated the 49ers in the Super Bowl just 3 seasons ago. He'll be reunited alongside Anquan Boldin, who was also on that Ravens team before being traded to San Fran. The big question for the Niners is what type of team will they be in 2015? We'll discuss that & their first round draft pick - defensive end Arik Armstead (Oregon) & more on The Rocket Sports Breakdown which airs this Wednesday morning @ 9:30am on Blog Talk Radio. Rocket Nation, get ready for our first big 32 for 32 power trip.
