While laws were evolve to better protect victims of domestic violence, our music culture also changed to reflect these new developments. It may seem obvious that culture and music enhance each other because music reflects the times. When beauty stereotypes were questioned in the early millennium, Christina Aguilera brought us “Beautiful.” When many Americans began to speak out against the Iraq war, Pearl Jam gave us “World Wide Suicide.” Today, when domestic violence has even reached the seemingly perfect life of Rihanna, where’s the music to cope with unexpected violence? Unfortunately, there’s a shortage of music containing lyrics that support women in harmful relationships. Furthermore, there’s a surplus of derogatory lyrics towards women within the hip-hop genre. Even though the situation for women is evolving slowly with respect to domestic violence, many songs still objectify women.
