Watching her parents’ battle drug addiction and violence, she found herself taking on adult responsibility as a child. After a number of bad decisions and her life headed for destruction, she became a teenage mother at the age of sixteen. As a young girl, she had dreams of “making a positive difference” in her family and community. Although she was met with many challenges before she turned eighteen years old, one becoming separated from her mother at the age of thirteen, and another becoming a teenage mother at the age of sixteen, she refused to allow those challenges to hinder her from pursuing the goals she set for her life. The controversy over the books and now the movie rages on and both sides continue to cling steadfastly to their beliefs, either deplorable or romantic. Now, you get to chime in with your opinion as I chat this week with both a young writer, Tracy Hancock and Chris Mallette, who advocates for domestic violence victims.
Together, we will explore the myths and misconceptions around the books and the movie and give you the opportunity to expand your understanding of the “grey” area between abuse and romance.
