The late 2013 pugilism frenzy was something else, and we're feeling the hangover now, especially as the sport's schedule has thinned out considerably in early 2014. But that's okay. There are big things on the horizon, and Bad Left Hook's James Foley and Queensberry-Rules' Patrick Connor will help you get through the rut. For starters, Jean Pascal faces Lucian Bute in a huge all-Canada match up on HBO, in addition to some middling action on Friday Night Fights, and so forth. We'll get through this together, fans. Thanks for tuning in!
Rumors have swirled about how many Pay-Per-View buys Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's win over Miguel Cotto pulled in, and so far the news is quite good, if not surprising. It was a solid kinda-middleweight fight, but perhaps not the clash many had hoped for.
The fight that stole all the attention was Francisco Vargas' war with Takashi Miura. In danger of being stopped by a damaged eye, Vargas rallied to end Miura's night in the 9th round. It was an instant "Fight of the Year" contender.
As some may have expected, Guillermo Rigondeaux didn't entertain much on the card.
But this coming weekend we get to see two huge fighters compete for the heavyweight title on in Wladimir Klitschko and Tyson Fury, on HBO. This could be a case of who you think will win and who you want to win being two different things.
Also on the menu, James DeGale fights a comebacking Lucian Bute on Showtime in Quebec City.
All these things and more will be covered by James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Fight City's Patrick Connor. And probably with too many jokes thrown in.

From round 1, there were boos coming from the crowd. Cunningham looked solid, but as usual he had no pop behind his punches, while Tarver had more power, especially in his left, but his punches were slower and seemed to be telegraphed.
Lucian Bute returned to action after a 19-month layoff and a record of 1-2 in his three previous outings. Bute took on Andrea Di Luisa in the main event of a PBC card on NBCSN in front of a very pro-Bute crowd in his adopted home of Canada at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
Earlier tonight on Unimas’ Solo Boxeo we got to see Jerry Belmontes back in action for the first time since losing to Dierry Jean not long ago in June. This time, he took on tough New Jersey native, Jason Sosa.
Jason Sosa has been on an extended comeback trail since taking his only career loss back in 2010 against Treysean Wiggins. Aside from two majority decision draws and a majority decision win, the Puerto Rican fighter out of Camden, New Jersey has had 11 consecutive stoppages. Now, Sosa adds another fighter on the long list of fighters to his resume, as he cracked his most known opponent to date, Jerry Belmontes in just 1 round. Giving Belmontes his only career stoppage in 27 fights.
Bute started off with the jab, moving it up and down, but mostly up. He looked a little awkward in the first round. I’m not sure if it was ring rust on Bute’s behalf or my own lack of familiarity with the fighter who resides in Canada because I haven’t seen him fight since he lost to Jean Pascal in January of last year, not to mention he’s only competed 3 times in as many years coming into tonight’s fight.
Eleider Alvarez got all he could handle against Isidro Prieto in their 12 round light heavyweight co-feature on the undercard of Lucian Bute’s headliner on PBC on NBCSN. The pair of undefeated fighters squared off at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where Alvarez now resides.
Roc Nation Sports, Golden Boy Promotions, Miguel Cotto Promotions and Canelo Promotions announced the highly anticipated clash of two titans in a classic Puerto Rico vs. Mexico battle. On Saturday, Nov. 21, Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KO’s), the reigning WBC, Ring Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Champion and the first native of Puerto Rico to become world champion in four different weight classes, and Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KO’s), a former WBC and WBA super-welterweight World champion will finally meet in the ring at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas for the WBC and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Championship. The championship event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.
Premier Boxing Champions on Spike is headlined by a 12-round heavyweight showdown between Antonio "Magic Man" Tarver (31-6, 22 KOs) and Steve "U.S.S." Cunningham (28-7, 13 KOs). Also featured on Spike is cruiserweight world champion Marco "Captain" Huck (38-2-1, 26 KOs) defending his title against Polish contender Krzyzstof Glowacki (24-0, 15 KOs) and Polish heavyweight Artur Szpilka (19-1, 14 KOs) taking on Cuba's Yasmany Consuegra (17-1, 14 KOs).
Lucian "Le Tombeur" Bute (31-2, 24 KOs) and Andrea Di Luisa (17-2). Also featured on NBCSN is light heavyweight contender Eleider "Storm" Alvarez (17-0) versus Isidro Ranoni "El Guerrero" Prieto (24-0-3) in a 12-round bout for the WBC Silver belt.
