Turning Life Experiences into a Compelling Memoir - Guest Jon D'Amore

    in Writing

Our guest Jon D’Amore was first published at 10 when a story he’d written about the Civil War was distributed throughout the county school system. During that time, he began studying the guitar. By his 20s, having honed his love and knowledge of music, Jon was traveling cross-country as a musician.

While touring, Jon was also a feature writer for New Jersey’s 3rd largest newspaper, The Passaic Herald News, allowing him to enjoy the best of his favorite worlds…playing music and writing. Eventually, he found a different side of life. He said, “Goodbye and it’s been a slice!” to the music business and entered the corporate world. By the millennium another
change had taken place. For more than two decades, Jon knew that within him there was the desire and ability to write, so he drove to Los Angeles and started as soon as he arrived.

As an insider with no mob ambitions, Jon had been a trusted ear and learned of the life and death manipulations that made friends and relatives from his world disappear. When the smoke cleared, Jon was one of the few left standing. The others were either dead or in prison. The Boss Always Sits In The Back isn’t “just another mob story.” It reveals the demise of the mobsters who ran northern New Jersey…as told by someone who was there.

He didn’t stop until the manuscript and screenplay for The Boss Always Sits In The Back were completed. Jon has written and co-written several screenplays and articles. He still resides in California where he continues to write…and listen to music and will share what it takes to write a compelling memoir and publicize it.

    Rev. Cyril Mayer – Bio
As a young adult, Cyril considered becoming a priest, but this changed when the Vietnam war began.  Cyril chose to be a conscientious objector and serve the country as an orderly working in a hospital.  He enjoyed helping people get well so much that he decided to go back to school to study nursing.  Early in his career as an RN, he discovered alternative healing modalities.  He became a channel of healing energy and studied metaphysical philosophy; eventually co-founding an intentional metaphysical healing community in the Pocono Mountains of PA in 1987.  This is where he met his wife Cyndy.  Both Cyril and Cyndy became respected teachers of the philosophy of the Living Spirit and mentors to many young healers and truth seekers.  They are both ordained ministers through Metaphysical Universal Ministries in Allentown, PA. They are in the process of relocating to Sarasota, Fl to continue their spiritual journey.

Rev. Cyndy was a natural intuitive even as a child.  She grew up on a farm in New Jersey where she had a horse named Cheyenne.  Through her telepathic connection with Cheyenne, Cyndy became aware of the basic connection between all things.

The Flatlanders: Now It's Now Again

    in Music

A group of three friends who made music in a house in Lubbock, Texas, recorded an album that wasn’t released and went their separate ways into solo careers. That group became a legend and then - twenty years later - a band. The Flatlanders - Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock - are icons in American music, with songs blending country, folk, and rock that have influenced a long list of performers, including Robert Earl Keen, the Cowboy Junkies, Ryan Bingham, Terry Allen, John Hiatt, Hayes Carll, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, and Lyle Lovett.

In The Flatlanders: Now It's Now Again, Austin author and music journalist John T. Davis traces the band’s musical journey from the house on 14th Street in Lubbock to their 2013 sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall. He explores why music was, and is, so important in Lubbock and how earlier West Texas musicians such as Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison, as well as a touring Elvis Presley, inspired the young Ely, Gilmore, and Hancock. Davis vividly recreates the Lubbock countercultural scene that brought the Flatlanders together and recounts their first year (1972–1973) as a band, during which they recorded the songs that, decades later, were released as the albums More a Legend Than a Band and The Odessa Tapes. He follows the three musicians through their solo careers and into their first decade as a (re)united band, in which they cowrote songs for the first time on the albums Now Again and Hills and Valleys and recovered their extraordinary original demo tape, lost for forty years. Many roads later, the Flatlanders are finally both a legend and a band.
