Trad Reviews IV: J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit
On the month's episode of Trad Reviews, we will be talking about the perennial classic works of J.R.R. Tolkien Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. We will take a deep look at these novels, how they present the central themes, some of the extremely few criticisms of the work, as well as dispelling some myths and misunderstandings associated with them. A close look will be given to the central characters in the novels and the lessons learned from each of them. From a Catholic perspective, it is obvious that Tolkien's deep Catholic faith played a central role in these works, and we will explain how. Additionally, we will compare and contrast the novels with the Hollywood series adaptations by Peter Jackson and discuss whether or not the silver screen versions of these does justice to the novels.
Lastly, we will close with a look at the Lord of the Rings board game and why the one we chose to discuss is worth looking into for wholesome entertainment.
Join us as host Nicholas Wansbutter gives his thoughts on Tolkien's works and why they are considered essential reading.

Isaiah 54:17 (KJV)
17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.
Isaiah 54:17 (NLT)
17 But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the LORD; their vindication will come from me. I, the LORD, have spoken!
Isaiah 54:17 (AMP)
17 But no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall show to be in the wrong. This [peace, righteousness, security, triumph over opposition] is the heritage of the servants of the Lord [those in whom the ideal Servant of the Lord is reproduced]; this is the righteousness or the vindication which they obtain from Me [this is that which I impart to them as their justification], says the Lord.

You see, my friends, there is in God a deep, abiding, essential joyousness.......and so, when we are rejoicing in that which rejoices Him, we may be truly said to share in the Divivne attributes of the Lord.
Why do our hearts bound on spring mornings with the joy of nature? Why does the beauty of the summer evening calm us? Why do we feel a glory and a joy as we tread the mountain-sides? Why do we feel a deepening peace as we walk amid the splendours of the golden autumn? Is it not because we realize the presence of a spirit of beauty surrounding us, and inspiring us with an emotion which no words can describe? Or why is it that when a truth breaks in upon us through clouds of doubt, and a clear vision of its beauty is gained after long and fruitless searching, we feel a thrill of joy deep and unspeakable? Have we not, after communion with a fellow believer, felt our own darkness dissipated, and our own isolation broken down? In that hour has not the touch of the Spirit made us feel stronger, wiser? And if this is true of earthly communion, must it not be supremely true when we walk in the fellowship of the Living God as our Heavenly Father?

How deep is your trust in the LORD? The trust that inspires our prayers must not only be in the Person of God, and of Christ but in their ability and willingness to grant the things we pray for. We must believe , as our LORD taught, that a condition of effective prayer is not from the head but from the heart. The promises of the LORD are so strong that when extended our faith operates in the present and counts on a present answer from HIM.
